Aidan, Ashton, or possibly Ryan - please help!

Sorry for long post - bottom line is which do you prefer: Aidan, Ashton or Ryan - feel free to skip the rest of my rambling post and just vote!

We've been going around in circles for MONTHS now... please help!

I tend to like traditional names - easily recognisable as a girl's or boy's name and not too troublesome to spell (give or take minor variations) or pronounce. It is important to me not to have overly-popular names - we managed a name for DD which is not even in the top 100.

I've liked Aidan for some time, I like the meaning and I'm Irish so lovely to have a name of Irish origin, a good solid been-around-for-centuries name. Ranked 91 in 2010 but if combined with Aiden would be around 45th and if Hayden added would be around 28th. I think it's been quite popular over the last 10 years. (Aidan spells Nadia backwards but I think i shouldn't worry too much about that). Not sure I like the nn's Aide or Dan/Danny.

Then we hit on Ashton which DH and I really loved until recently, now we are starting to question it. We are wondering whether... no offense here.... is it a bit chavvy / trying too hard, or will date easily, or is a bit career-limiting (says 'working in Tesco' rather than 'goes to university', and although (currently) a cool name is it not quite friendly / cuddly enough for my little boy? I want a name that is stong and manly for an adult but that is also friendly and nice, IYKWIM? It's in the top 100 but I think around 77th in 2010, in the 400's in 2000 so becoming more popular. Could be shortened to Ash to make it more friendly, but that almost seems a bit of a non-name, it that makes any sense?

Ryan is next on our list but seems a bit too popular? 30th in 2010 but around 15th in 2000. Also reminds me a little of Ryanair.

Oh dear. Can you tell that we've been over-thinking this for that last 6 months?

DD's name is Sylvia, so the name has to sound ok with hers.

So... what do YOU like? (apologies again for the unnecessarily long post)

I think they are 3 totally different names, Ashton of the moment, Ryan a bit 90's, Aidan classic.

So def Aidan for me.

ceebie · 05/01/2012 16:53

Also, if I'm trying to avoid popular names, and MNers say they like Aidan best and Ashton least, does that mean that I should actually choose the name people like LEAST so as not to go for a popular one??? Grin Grin Grin

Good list Jester. There is already an Oliver and an Aaron in my close family. I quite like Liam, Alex and Daniel, although not sure whether I like them enough to go with them - will have to see whether any grow on me.

Ryan definitely Smile

perplexedpirate · 05/01/2012 16:59

Ashton is a town near where I live. It's hell's own bumhole.

Curtainmyself · 05/01/2012 17:02

None of them (sorry)

oikopolis · 05/01/2012 17:02

ceebie imo Aidan is ranked higher than that in reality, because of the plethora of misspellings that it attracts.

Not just Aidan and Aiden, but
Ayden
Aydan
Aydyn
Aidyn
Aeden
Aedin
Aedyn
... ad infinitum. It seems that the spell-it-your-way brigade has a particular love for Aidan.

Then there's the rhyming variants that are so popular these days...
Jayden/Jaidyn/Jaiden/Jaydyn/etc.
Brayden/Braeden/Braiden/etc.
Grayden/Graiden/Graydyn/etc.

AAAGH

Whereas Ryan has not been toyed with in quite the same way. So it doesn't seem nearly as ubiquitous!! Just looked it up, and Aidan/Aiden moved up 30+ places in 2010, but Ryan went down 9 places, so I think it is on its way down the ranks.

Having said all that, Aidan's a good name in and of itself & you can't really go wrong with it.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2012 18:01

"Aidan, imo, is overexposed to the point of comedy in this generation."

How do you come up with that, given its placing in the popularity charts?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2012 18:02

The only alternative spelling I have actually come across is the den version.

Littlecherublegs · 05/01/2012 18:05

Aidan definitely! Would be on our shortlist if our surname didnt begin with 'A'!!

In order:
Aidan
Ryan
Ashton

pinkhebe · 05/01/2012 18:10

I prefer Adrian.

oikopolis · 05/01/2012 18:12

SoupDragon it may be that I'm thinking more of the American charts than the UK ones. It's #3 in the US if you take into account Aiden, Aidan and Aden. ref: www.babynames.com/Names/Popular/

oikopolis · 05/01/2012 18:19

and the census says #9 for Aiden alone www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/index.html

ceebie · 05/01/2012 19:16

oikopolis great name analysis, I am seriously impressed!

Ok so we are ruling out Ashton, still not entirely sure about Aidan vs Ryan as we will have to mull it all over (as if the last 6 months of mulling haven't been enough - only 2 more to go!), although Ryan has increased somewhat in my estimation.

Thank you all so much for all the help so far - has been great!!!

I like Ryan. I have an 18yo stepson of that name and the name suits him as much as it did when he was a baby. Can be shorted to Ry only, which I likle.

Glad you have gone off Ashton as it is chavtastic - like Britney 10 years ago!

Not keen on Aiden but it is ok.

sarah7492 · 05/01/2012 20:11

LOVE Ryan!....Ryan is a cool name. Not chavvy..not old manish..just a good, strong, cool name. Grin

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 06/01/2012 20:02

I quite like Ryan.

NOT Ashton. Every person will say

"Oh! As in Kutcher?"
"Yes."

JestersHat · 06/01/2012 20:08

Definitely the classic Aidan over Ryan(air).
