My husband and I want to name our first girl after my mother Mary, I love both Molly & Maisy which are pet forms of Mary but feel they are too popular at the moment.
I did a bit of research on the web and came accross Marybella or alternativly spelt Maribella and I have to say I love it. To me its very girly, uncommon and quite prim & proper which I love.
Please give me your honest opinion on Marybella! The second name would be Catherine after my nana.
Molly Catherine
Marybella Catherine
Thanks in advance!

What about Marie or Maria? I'm not keen on Marybella it sounds like a hyphenated name and round here hyphenated names are a bit Hmm. I love Catherine though.

zumm · 04/01/2012 21:39

If you love it, that's all that matters. Hairybelly does come to (my, ahem) mind. But then it's a lot more interesting than Molly.

margoandjerry · 04/01/2012 21:39

Love Marybella but also love just Mary. Something simple and lovely about it and I think it's due a comeback. Mary was on my list as was Mary-Anne (the name of my first doll) and I still sometimes wonder if, at 43 with two children, it would be unreasonable to have a third just so I could have someone to call Mary-Anne (boy or girl)

Hulababy · 04/01/2012 21:39

My DD is called Mollie.
Although it is popular on baby name lists DD has no other friends with the name and none of our family and friend's have a Molly either.

mathanxiety · 04/01/2012 21:42

Not sure about Marybella but how about Maribel? I knew a Puerto Rican woman of this name and I always liked it. Maribelle might be nice too.

I think the -bella ending after the name with the R in it is a bit like beri beri or rubella, or both sort of mixed up.

Molly is too much of a nn to use as a first name imo although I know it's more of a bona fide name at this point. I see it as old ladyish and not in a good way.

Cardano · 04/01/2012 21:43

I'd love 'Marie'.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 04/01/2012 21:44

My beautiful DD is Molly Mary so I love both. Have not heard Marybella but think it is lovely. Think the Maribella spelling looks more natural but reminds me more of Maribell. So, on reflection, Marybella would be better. Love it Grin

YummyMummybee · 04/01/2012 21:46

Hulababy I absolutely adore Molly but we live in Ireland so it seems to be alot more popular over here - in the top 20 for last few years. I really do love Mary especially since Downton Abbey-Lady Mary is my heroine!!!
Would like to keep it a little bit more unusual and put our own twist on the name hence bella or belle at the end. Thanks for taking the time to reply would love to know if anyone knows a Marybella/ Maribella and could help me make up a little imaginary profile lol!!

I know a Maribel who is, ahem, a character. She is also 84 :o

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2012 21:58

Molly Catherine fine.

Marybella is terrible, sorry - it sounds like a Sindy Lou Who kind of name.

mathanxiety · 04/01/2012 22:01

Would you consider Christabel?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2012 22:02

Love Christabel.

seeker · 04/01/2012 22:06

Where did you find Marybella? Honestly, it's not a name for a person,it's a name for a cow!

peggyblackett · 04/01/2012 22:09

Love Mary. Not a huge fan of Marybella tbh.

TuttoRhino · 04/01/2012 22:09

What about Marianne? I loved it and had it on my list. Love Catherine but prefer the K spelling. Was also on my list but had a dispute with DH over the K or C spelling and the nickname.

peggyblackett · 04/01/2012 22:12

Marianne is lovely.

SoupDragon · 04/01/2012 22:16

Marybella sounds like two names stuck together.

YummyMummybee · 04/01/2012 22:17

Thanks for the honest opinions! I googled varients of Mary and got my list 90 different forms apparently! However Marybella/Maribella stuck out as it had the Mary and I always adored belle/bella names not to gone on the mariannes, marykates, mary theresas etc.
Christabelle is lovely but want a form of Mary after my mom. Would spell Catherine with a C as my nan spelt it that way!! All opinions taken on board-we still have Molly as front runner but I just thought Marybella was very unusual & quite a romantic type of name!!

Don't like Marybella at all.

Molly is nice.
Quite like Mary.
Marianne is nice as well.
I've always liked Marnie (bit of an acquired taste though!)

If you want Mary but with a bit extra I'd go for hyphenated and use;
Mary-Louise/Mary-Lou
Mary-Elouise
Mary-Jo
Mary-(anything else, but not Bella)

YummyMummybee · 04/01/2012 22:23

Hubby also suggested Mariyah but I'm unconvinced!
I like Marnie too-its quite grown up but then again LO can grow into it as opposed to out grow it
As I said Molly is front runner still, Maribella/Marybella will still get brought up. Annabella works so well so why not Marybella? x

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 04/01/2012 22:23

Hmm - I really don't like Marybella, it just sounds like two names badly stuck together. I think you should just go with Mary. I like Molly too though. My pick would be Maisie, but honestly if you are naming her after a Mary, I think you should just call her Mary or choose something completely different. I don't get this 'you were called Molly after your Nan Mary' Confused

paulapantsdown · 04/01/2012 22:24

Marybella is awful.

i think just Mary is lovely. Actually really unusual now as not in use very often. Its really pretty.

missmiss · 04/01/2012 22:24

Maribel?

missmiss · 04/01/2012 22:25

With a short Mar.

hester · 04/01/2012 22:27

Marybella will not be popular. If that doesn't bother you, go ahead!

I think Marnie is a lovely alternative.
