So do we reckon that Mary, Edith and Sybil are going to have a resurgence then?

My niece (3 and a half) is a Mary and she is gorgeous!

CharlieBoo · 05/01/2012 20:51

Violet, Daisy, Mary and Cora, all beautiful names.

sneezecakesmum · 05/01/2012 21:07

I've met a baby Edith. And my elderly mothers name was Edith..so definitely a golden oldie I would love to see back Smile

FannyBazaar · 05/01/2012 21:13

My cat's called Sybil (or Sybille as she likes to I spell it). If I had a girl, I think Violet was on the list.

fivegomadindorset · 05/01/2012 21:15

DD is Edith, she is nearly 6, I have a friend who has an Edith and a Mary.

sam26oscar · 05/01/2012 21:24

Love the name Violet and know a 3yo with it, love the name Cora too, however the name we use for ladies bits is Mary so that was a no no in my house Grin.

exoticfruits · 05/01/2012 21:42

I agree that Edith and Mary have already made a comeback.I can't see it with Sybil and Cora.

reelingintheyears · 05/01/2012 22:54

Sybil is hideous.

I was named for my aunt, who was born around 1916 so prime Downton time?

She was called Sybil Annie Mary

I got one of those but I'm not saying which one Grin

NoHunIntended · 06/01/2012 02:16

I have a Downton name - Abbey! :) (Though I spell it Abi!)

FellatioNelson · 06/01/2012 04:48

I love Edith and Sybil very much, and Mary is really growing on me too. Anna has never really fallen out of favour I don't think - a true classic but never trendy, so I don't think it will take off particularly.

Cora is quite nice, but I am really, really struggling with Ethel. I suppose now Lily's baby is called Ethel it will seep into our concsciousness and we will learn to like it again.

But please God, no Enids, Ednas, Gertrudes or Hildas. Just NO.

In fact Enid is surely the ugliest old-lady name of all. Strange how Edith is so beautiful and elegant, yet Ethel and Enid are not.Confused

I know a girl called Isis (she's about 9) I think that will take off now, if it hadn't already. It's lovely.

sybilsmum · 06/01/2012 09:54

Namechanged for this as not to out myself, but we called our daughter Sybil more than 10 years ago and we know another one, slightly older, as well. We get a lot of positive comments but took the grandparents a while to get used to it.

3boysgirlontheway · 06/01/2012 10:38

ceebie I will have to wait until one of my friends buys season 2 boxset, I am too mean to go and purchase myself Smile

exaspomum · 06/01/2012 14:53

D'you think Hilda, Gladys or Hazel will ever come back into fashion?

N1MTB · 06/01/2012 15:14

DD is nearly 2 1/2 - she's Edith (known as "Edie").... I know of another Edith who is 3 1/2 so it's not uncommon at the moment - as has been said, it fits with the "old lady name" trend. (Mind you, I have an old lady name and was teased at school in the 80s - it's quite popular for little girls now.) Am most annoyed though that the Downton Edith is so awkward/plain. (But have only watched series 1 - perhaps she cheers up a bit and is more fun in series 2.)

supermama212 · 06/01/2012 15:40

Boys
what about Kamul (pamuk?)

ComposHat · 06/01/2012 17:24

I could never call a child Edith as I can't resist saying 'Edith' in the voice of the old woman from 'ello 'ello

In my mind Sybil only means one thing (Fawlty Towers) and for that reason I could never call a babe in arms by such a name. And sorry, but Ethel really is not a name for a baby. Think Edie (as in Sedgwick the famous Andie Warhol muse) is a lovely diminutive for Edith....

Like Cora too - wasn't someone in Last of the Mohicans thus named....?

Yes, but Tim Minchin ( who is mine, by the way, hands off) also has a Caspare, so I don't think he can be used as a good role model!

AtLongLast · 06/01/2012 20:54

We have an 8 week old Cora. It was my Grandma's name and her Dad named her after an opera singer. We didn't know about the TV characters of the same name (Downton Abbey, Eastenders, Maxwell House advert) until people started wondering if we'd gotten inspiration from them. I had been pleased that it is fairly uncommon (434th or thereabouts last year) until that point, especially since it's not a name I particularly love.... not that I'm overly bothered about such stuff given both our boys have top 10 names.

MotherOfCora · 06/01/2012 21:27

Oh darn -- is it a bloody EastEnders name as well? Arsebiscuits.

Cwtchbach · 06/01/2012 22:25

My mn is Lavinia, its also my Mum and Gran's first names. I used to hate it but I actually really like it now I'm 'grown up'. There is a little girl at DS's nursery called Lavinia, it sounds so sweet on her and not old fashioned at all. I know a little Cora too.

AtLongLast · 06/01/2012 22:36

I don't follow `Enders v closely but it is the name of Tanya Branning's mother so not a main character/ cute new baby & probably not a huge source of inspiration. Noticeable enough for a number of people to mention to us though Hmm
