DH has decided that he loves it.

It fits our bill - arabic, not that used in UK (as in a name non arabic speakers are very aware of ) but yet not completely non sayable on first reading. Great wonderful and meaning is lovely.

But I just keep thinking about President Mubarak and think that would be a bit harsh on DC
DH thinks that it doesn't matter at all.

What do you think?

Sorry, don't know what it means in Arabic, but yes the connotations in the West are pretty much universally negative owing to the ex-President.

It means Blessed.
That it what I feared - DH is set on it

Sorry, negative connotations in the West.

I've taught too many naughty Mubaraks I'm afraid! But I'd think of them before I thought of President Mubarak tbh.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 03/01/2012 22:02

Well i wouldn't worry about the connotations in the west Confused, or nobody would give their child an Islamic name.

Just from a personal point of view, we have a Mubarak in dh family and he is the most massive PITA Grin. So no, it's not a name i'd choose.

It would've been Esa, or Yousef if DD had of been a boy.

I know a little Mubarak and now think of him, not any ex-President. People will soon lose any previous associations, especially as he's no longer a president anyway.

Mubarak sounds ugly to me, phonetically speaking.

I have no associations with it beyond using it as a greeting during Eid, tbh. That's that I think of first.

FWIW, my favourite Arabic boy's name is Tariq and I'm always dying for a Muslim friend to use it :)

dezfree · 04/01/2012 19:44

Heck I am Egyptian and I don't even think of him straight away - I think of DPs cousin who is lovely.

As a name it is alright not amazing

tigercametotea · 04/01/2012 19:48

There was a Mubarak in my DD's nursery class. It sounds very different. Not sure I'd use it if I'm not of Arabic heritage.

SubordinateClaws · 05/01/2012 08:40

Barry for short?

shouldnotbehere · 05/01/2012 11:26

I immediately thought of President Mubarak.

I know a little arabic boy called Ziad, everyone calls him Zee.

I always like the arabic name Khaled.

poppydaisy · 05/01/2012 11:29

Nice to reflect your cultural heritage and agree that the meaning is lovely. People will soon lose old associations and think of your son when hearing the name.
