Can I use Beatrice if our surname is an adjective?

We'd use the nickname Bea, so she would then be known as eg "Bea Small" or "Bea Brown" or "Bea Rich" or "Bea Pretty"

If it helps, our surname is quite a nice, positive thing to 'be'.

But it would make our daughter's name a complete sentence. Is that okay?

Oh I think it might be pushing things tbh. She might not thank you for it.

smother · 03/01/2012 13:33

I think you might be overthinking - what's your surname?

swanfall · 03/01/2012 13:33

If it's a nice thing to 'be' and doesn't sound too weird then I see no problem with it!

Some combinations sound odder than others - Bea Brown, Bea Green etc is fine, but Bea Rich is weird, even if being rich is a good thing :)

GlaikitFizzog · 03/01/2012 13:33

Well considering I know a Pat Dry I thnk it would be ok!!

3boysgirlontheway · 03/01/2012 13:35

People might notice or comment the first time they hear it but, as soon as they know her they will forget that it means something IYKWIM?

Dying to know the surname Blush

redrubyshoes · 03/01/2012 13:38

I know a Di Young

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 03/01/2012 13:49

Is it Happy?

GlaikitFizzog · 03/01/2012 14:02

I know a Di Young too!

SilentBoob · 03/01/2012 14:05

Laughing at Pat Dry, and eeek at Di Young.

It is a very ordinary name, just happens to also be an adjective.

Hmm. Beatrice is pretty. We are REALLY struggling with girls names. You have no idea. The list is endless and none of them are quite right. I am half hoping the baby is a boy so we don't have to bring up a daughter with no name.

I don't think you can use Bea - or any other name starting with a 'B'.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/01/2012 14:29

I don't think it makes a difference as long as your surname isn't Smelley or Asmartarse or something. You can overthink these things.

thisisyesterday · 03/01/2012 14:31

just call her Beatrice and then it wouldn't matter?

jandymaccomesback · 03/01/2012 14:37

Or Beatrice shortened to Beattie.

Hohohohappysqueezer · 03/01/2012 14:44

What about Trixy?
I presume her name would be Beatrice when you have her passport name etc.
Rather than calling her Bea Love, or whatever.
When would you use the NN and the surname together?
Beatrice is a great name.

rosesatdawn · 03/01/2012 15:54

i think betty is also a legitimate nn for beatrice which might be an option

FetchezLaVache · 03/01/2012 15:57

I know a Dawn Slaughter, but that's her married name- her parents aren't that cruel- but I think Di Young beats even that. What are people thinking?

FWIW I would steer clear of Bea, much as I love the name, and, as Indigo said, any other name beginning with B.

JenniferEight · 03/01/2012 15:58

Oh I'd do it, there's no reason not to really - it isn't going to look like you are trying to make a joke, if your surname is normal and her first name is also not that unusual.

I am thinking Bea Good Smile which would be a dual purpose name.

JenniferEight · 03/01/2012 15:58

Yes Beatrice is really pretty.

SilentBoob · 03/01/2012 16:01

Hmmm. I particularly like Bea.

Well, not an overriding NO. It's still on the list.

Okay, moving on to other names - can anyone tell me what Lettice is traditionally short for? The baby name websites say Leticia (or variations of same) but I am sure it is something else too.

OP posts:
JenniferEight · 03/01/2012 16:10

Lettice was just a name. It means happiness.

Letty can be short for other things though.

JestersHat · 03/01/2012 16:17

Beatrice is nice but Bea Adjective is problematic, yes.

I also think Lettice Adjective could be tricky. Lettice Brown - you immediately think of brown lettuce leaves.

LaCalaveraCatrina · 03/01/2012 16:28

Or if your surname is 'Pray'

SilentBoob · 03/01/2012 17:06

Lettice Pray Grin
