DP and I got talking tonight about names - we reached an agreement about middle names. 1 from each culture (he's 3rd gen british pakistani muslim, I'm egyptian coptic christian)
Even though we are beginning ttc after our wedding in a few short weeks we are all ready at logger heads about first names.

So we thought an arabic name that is used within the coptic church - so basically a biblical name but the arabic version but a version that Back home (for me) that is used/accepted. But wouldn't sound purely islamic to english ears

Boys

Musa/Moosa
Yussef

Girls

Miriam/Maryam
Sarah

Any more ideas because we really need some more? And what do you think of these?

I love Miriam. I've got a Miriam. I'd stay old testament, really. I wondered about Raphael/Rafael, which could be shortened to Rafi, if I'd had a boy.

(We wanted names that also reflected our various origins!)

I think you're crazy to be thinking about this now, tbh. You haven't even started ttc. Speaking as someone who had great difficulty conceiving dc1 and never gor pregnant again, you don't know what's in the future. There's plenty time to talk baby names when you're pregnant.

Enjoy your wedding and the ttc afterwards Wink

I know happy but it is also in an attempt to keep our minds off something else at the moment.

We were in the process of adopting a little girl from Vietnam when adoptions were halted from there. I had already thought of a name for our dd (Lucy) and had gathered stuff for her. When the adoption didn't go ahead, it made it harder that we had a name chosen etc, it made it more real, more tangiable. When I was taking down Christmas decorations, I found a box marked 'For Lucy Loo' and even though everything is wonderful in my life now, it brought back the sadness of that time. I just wouldn't want you to make anything harder for yourself.

Best of luck for your forthcoming wedding, hope the aunt gets food poisoning a few days before and doesn't go!! Weddings bring out the best in people and the worst in others. Don't let anyone spoil it for you.

I know an Aquila (pronounced Ak-eela) she's Pakistani born so the name I'm guessing originates from there. She's lovely and I think her name is lovely too. It might also be the name of an actual star or constellation IIRC.

lisaro · 03/01/2012 09:22

I would assume Mussa and Yussef were islamic.

dezfree · 03/01/2012 10:39

another as much as I love some of those names - Demiana esp has always been 'my name' but some are either just coptic or english names and to fit with DH they would have to be Arabic version so if Isaac it would be Ishaq. (also for me as my first language is Arabic)

I suggest a look at the Old Testament for Jewish names shared by Christians and Muslims.
Adam, for example.

MerryMarigold · 04/01/2012 22:02

How about a name that is arabic but not Muslim or Christian?

My Iraqi cousin-in-law (Mandean family, but I think atheist herself!) named her little girl Nina. Middle name is Cleo. They were going to have Layla, but didn't in the end.

Hi,

you can check out:

www.arabicenglishbabynames.com

It lists all the names that work in both english and arabic.
Good luck!

MikeUniformMike · 06/02/2019 13:20

Many OT names and some NT have Muslim versions.
Miriam/Maryam
Rachel/Raheela
Adam
Elias/Ilyas
John/Yahya
etc etc.

Some Pakistani friends who are now British have a DD called Maria, which surprised me because they are muslim, but they said it was OK.
I like it.

VenusClapTrap · 06/02/2019 13:30

I love Maryam. I also really like Musa - it’s the Latin name for banana!

Cyrus? Darius? I’ve always loved these names but don’t know if they’d fit your criteria. I think there were Egyptian Christian saints called Cyrus.
