Reggie or Laurie and Aurelia or Aurora?

We've shortlisted two names for each sex for DTs (one of each sex). They are Reginald Stuart (Reggie) or Lawrence Stuart (Laurie) for a boy and Aurora Gabrielle or Aurelia Gabrielle for a girl. Our only real issue is that we couldn't have Lawrence and Aurelia together (sounds too much like Lawrence of Arabia). What do you think and can you suggest any other names we might like, we don't really love either of the above.

Sorry, dot mean to be rude, but...

Reggie...Perrin or Kray? Poor child

Aurelia etc, too much like part of the breast for me

And agree totally about Lawrence of Arabia.

Sorry.

Laurence/Laurie is brilliant. Reggie is dreadful.

Don't like the girls' names. How about - Arianna/Ariadne/Hermione/Cassandra (Cassie)/Naomi/Marianne?

nooka · 01/01/2012 23:23

Laurence/Laurie (doesn't it need to be Laurence rather than Lawrence for Laurie?) is great. I really don't like Reggie at all. I think the combination with either Aurora/Aurelia is a bit of a tongue twister, and have to admit I'm not keen on either.

DS was going to be Octavia or Aurelia if he was a girl but ended up as Sebastian.

We also liked Benedict, Reuben, Penelope, Beatrice, Anastasia, Evelyn, Ursula and Sophia.

I like Lawrence but not keen on Reginald.

Laurie is really nice.

I like the girls' names, but how about: Lydia, Talia, Aviva (Iknow it's a car, but it was a beautiful Israeli name first), Arielle, Allegra, Dora, Thea, Manya, Tamara, Ada, Tessa, Roisin?

FinnRoe · 02/01/2012 23:09

I really like Thea and Penelope, I'll put them forward to DH.

Lawrence with Laurie for short would be fine.

Aurelia and Aurora both lovely, hard to choose between them!

KatAndKit · 03/01/2012 10:14

Lawrence or Aurelia in my opinion. However you have a point about them sounding odd together as twins. If you say Aurelia and Lawrence instead that solves the problem. If you have to change one, keep Lawrence and change the girls name, as your other options are fine but I don't like Reggie at all.

Laurence is a girls name in France, the female version of Laurent. Just like the name Florence (and Florent). Laurie looks very girly to me too, I'm afraid.

I prefer Reginald - more masculine and stronger sounding. Reggie is a cute nickname.

I like both Aurora and Aurelia but would probably choose Aurora because there are so many Amelias around which is quite similar imo.

glittershoes · 03/01/2012 12:08

I love Aurora and am currently trying to persuade DH into it for our baby due this summer... he is standing firm with a no!

I would go with Laurence and Aurora although I am not massively keen on Laurence (just not to my taste).

Another thought, Rex is a shortenting Reginald if that works better for you and avoids the Reggie connotations (if you are bothered at all!)

My Dad's name is Laurie(not Lawrence but after the Scottish surname). He lives in The States now and goes by his middle name, John, because there are so many females called Laurie/Lori. Just a thought, in case there's a chance you'll move abroad.
I love Aurelia and Aurora. Beautiful.

othersideofchannel · 03/01/2012 19:26

Another vote against Laurence/Laurie - it is a girls' name to me and sound very feminine.

Reginald is ok but it is unequivocally a boys name in most countries and Reggie is a cute nickname for a toddler.

I like both Aurora and Aurelia - both lovely and feminine.

survivingwinter · 03/01/2012 20:07

Laurie (Lawrence or Laurence) and Aurelia sound fine to me - am not keen on Reggie. Anastasia/Ariadne/Anika/Anya/Anthea are also nice if you are looking for 'A' names..

I have a DS called Laurie (Laurence) and also have 4 friends called Laurie who are all boys. The gender thing raised by some posters above is not an issue we have ever experienced here in the UK (Laurie Lee was unequivocally male after all) and I get loads of positive comments about his name Grin

othersideofchannel · 03/01/2012 21:47

Well, Laurence/Laurie may well sound male in the UK but the OP ought to know that in other countries it may be perceived as female. In an increasingly global world, who knows where our children may end up studying or living one day Smile?

nooka · 04/01/2012 06:36

We live in Canada, where my ds's common English name is sometimes thought to be a girl's name because it's not very common here, and the shortening he uses ends 'ie'. It's not really been a problem for him though. One of his school friends is called Larry, which any Laurence could always use in extremis.

Who names their child when thinking of some hypothetical future in a foreign land though?

survivingwinter · 04/01/2012 11:41

nooka - quite Smile

There is a whole list of gender neutral names - the Americans are famous for changing the gender of traditionally perceived names e.g Sidney. My own name is a traditional boys name in Africa!
