Long name for nn Cal

chummymummy7 · 01/01/2012 17:15

I adore the nn Cal (for a boy) but am not too fond of the names Callum or Caleb.
Can anyone think of another boys' name that would give us this nn?
Or is Cal strong enough as a name in its own right? (the middle name will probably be Adam). It would need to go with our one-syllable, strong-ish surname that rhymes with Mayes.

Thanks so much!

ggirl · 01/01/2012 17:17

I know a Calvin Grin
but I'm not keen

MatLeaveForever · 01/01/2012 17:19

California? Calbert? Hmm

goingtoofast · 01/01/2012 17:25

Malcom

PlumSykes · 01/01/2012 17:29

Callan

rockinastocking · 01/01/2012 17:30

Callum?

rockinastocking · 01/01/2012 17:31

Oh sorry, just re-read OP.

I like just going with the name you like, tbh. Nowt wrong with Cal. It's a cool name.

CecilyP · 01/01/2012 17:35

Cameron? Callan? I think you could use Cal on its own but not with Adam where it becomes Caladam (which sounds like a cross between chaos and bedlam.) If you love it, perhaps you could think of a different middle name.

Takver · 01/01/2012 17:37

I'd say Calvin - I know a couple (though both adult) and its a good name IMO.

NoHunIntended · 01/01/2012 17:38

Calais
Calder
Caldwell
Cale
Caleb
Caley
Calgary
Calhoun
Calico
Calix
Callahan
Callan
Callias
Calvin
Calypso

NoHunIntended · 01/01/2012 17:42

Or, how about giving him any C name, first mn Adam, second mn beginning with L, giving initials CAL?

MatLeaveForever · 01/01/2012 17:47

Or Cole sounds similar but is a full name.

crystalglasses · 01/01/2012 17:49

Nohunintended's suggestion is excellent

chummymummy7 · 01/01/2012 18:29

Calvin - too many associations unfortunately (Klein, Harris, poncey boy from my school)
Malcolm - in the middle!
Callan - hadn't heard of this one, thanks.

Ace suggestion Nohunintended - I'm just not a fan of multiple middle names.

Has anyone heard of Caled (pronounced 'Call-id')? Or am I now verging on the ridiculous?

How about Charles?

Not sure if Caled is a name - do you mean Khalid as in Khalid Gibran?

Theas18 · 01/01/2012 18:39

Not just Cal with MN Adam (or anything with a vowel) or you'll invent a whole new name of your own- just imagine...

"Caladam Smith to consulting room 3 please"

You need to watch "M" sounds at the end of words too-

Callum Adam will easily slide into Cal Madam which I'm guessing isn't your plan....

Go shakespearian- Caliban!

NewBikeForChristmas · 01/01/2012 18:43

My nephew is Cullin, could that work?

saoifre · 01/01/2012 19:06

I think Cal is sometimes short for Cahal or Cathal, an Irish saint's name.

chummymummy7 · 01/01/2012 19:40

Anothermincepie - Charles is just that bit too royal/posh for us - and you might be right about Caled/Khalid, the boy I knew with that name was Asian.

Hadn't thought about the Caladam issue - good point!

Cullin - is really sweet but I think everyone'll hear it as Colin

really useful story lockets - I guess the lesson is to go with the name you really love

DH and me also like Caspar....was thinking could do that with nn cal?

Another one to throw out there: - Crosby. Have grown to like it lots (maybe becasue it's the name of a favourite character in a tv show) but is it too American or too Cosby Show?!

Mayvis · 01/01/2012 19:42

Calvert?

BabyDubsEverywhere · 01/01/2012 19:53

Caledon? (As in Billy Zane in Titanic?)
Kalel? As in Supermans real name :)

hmm, think everything else has been suggested :)

Think the C.A.L initial idea is the best one tbh.

wigglesrock · 01/01/2012 20:14

I really like Cal, I'd just use it as a stand alone name, I knew a few Cathals that got Cal. It does always remind me of the Bernard MacLaverty book though.

Sorry but don't like Crosby at all.

nooka · 01/01/2012 20:17

I really like Calvin. Crosby is very surname to m, and I don't think that Cal is an obvious nn for it. Not sure about Casper on that front either, but perhaps if you like it then you wouldn't be going down the nn route?

There don't seem to be very other names that include "cal" not already mentioned. Pascal perhaps?

chummymummy7 · 02/01/2012 18:31

Will need to have a think about Calvin - and put it to DH (where it will surely get veto-ed). Getting the confidence to just go for Cal as a standalone name though - thanks everyone!
