Elodie, Cleo, Bronte, Layla or ???

We are due to have a baby girl in 3 weeks or so and would love some opinions on our shortlist.

I can't find the perfect name, although I do love these names in spite of my criticisms. Any further suggestions welcome.

Elodie, Cleo, Bronte, Layla

  • Elodie - French name that rhymes with Melody (when pronounced in English) - could be mispronounced/confusing to some. Possible middle names Eden, Eve or Rae. It is beautiful though and my husbands fav at the moment.
  • Cleo - sounds like the car, a magazine in Australia (where we are from) and a popular pets name. No idea on middle names. I love it's simplicity though - so cute and would suit any age.
  • Bronte Bella - was our girl name last time (we have three boys) - I still like it but has two pronunciations. We say Bron-tee.
  • Layla - getting way too popular where we live but a sweet name.

Any feedback or further suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Love Elodie and really like Cleo. Not sure of any of those middle names with Elodie though - having 2 'e' names run together. Rae seems a bit 'filler' to me.

If you like the sound of Eve then how about Elodie Neve/Elodie Niamh? It just breaks up the alliteration.

nikster · 01/01/2012 15:49

My Dad's name is Ray which is where the Rae comes from. Eve is also a family name.
I can see what you mean about the alliteration - especially following a name that starts and finishes with an 'e' sound.

I love Clio/Cleo- it can be short for Cliona/Clíodhna. All of the names you've chosen are very pretty.

AnotherMincepie · 01/01/2012 16:19

Elodie - very pretty. Rae nice as middle name but I don't think Eden or Eve go so well as they're too similar to the first name
Cleo - yes it's a car (with different spelling)
Bronte Bella - sounds like a surname followed by a magazine
Layla - OK

Strawberrytallcake · 01/01/2012 16:23

Elodie and Layla are my favourites! Lovely selection, good taste :)

nikster · 01/01/2012 19:56

Elodie has been a favourite of mine for years and DH has finally come around to loving it too and now I'm not sure if it goes with my boys names - I think Cleo goes better.
We have Fr@zer, Asht0n and F1ynn.
(Sorry about the symbols - would rather this thread didn't show up on Google if my boys names are entered together!)

I really like Elodie Eve :-)

Newtothisstuff · 01/01/2012 19:59

I love Layla or even Leila I'm trying to talk me DH into one of those

Archip17 · 01/01/2012 22:24

I LOVE Elodie, but sadly we know one, so it's out for us. Elodie Rae sounds nicest I think.

3boysgirlontheway · 02/01/2012 11:37

Elodie is my favourite from your list. I don't like how Bronte is pronounced in Australia and the others just are not to my taste.

Good luck, I am also having a girl after 3 boys, exciting isn't it!

SoFreshNSoClean · 02/01/2012 12:49

I like Cleo and Leila but not Layla.

Bronte is vile (sorry)

Elodie is OK.

MrsBovary · 02/01/2012 13:00

Elodie is the best here, then Cleo or Layla.

I dislike Bronte, it ought to be nice (literary connections), but seems to be favoured by modern-surname brigade. I dislike the pronunciation(s) too.

oikopolis · 02/01/2012 16:08

Elodie is the best by far. Beautiful name, would love to use it myself!

Cleo and Layla are mildly stripperish to my ear.

Bronte is awful, sorry.

nikster · 02/01/2012 17:35

Elodie seems to be the most popular - which my husband is chuffed about! I love it too and if our little girl hates having to explain her name all the time in future she can always choose to become Elle, Ellie or Dee. In the meantime we won't be shortening it.
The middle name is still undecided.
My Dad's name is Ray so Elodie Rae is an option.
DH recently lost his grandmother and it would be nice to honour her. Her name was Jana.
Does Elodie Jenna or Jana work?
Thanks so much for all of your comments.

I really like Cleo, quite dignified at any age. Elodie is nice, I wouldn't have thought of it, won't be common.

peggyblackett · 02/01/2012 17:42

Elodie. I do know one, but still v.unusual.

oikopolis · 02/01/2012 18:11

I like Elodie Rae.
Elodie Jane is also really nice. Not that keen on Elodie Jana tbh.

nikster · 02/01/2012 22:14

I think a single syllable name does go best in the middle.

Elodie Jenna is lovely

Motherofhobbit · 04/01/2012 07:23

I love Bronte. Not sure the Bella works after it though. Um, how is it pronounced in Australia? >>curious

JestersHat · 04/01/2012 09:01

Elodie Jana is nice :)

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/01/2012 09:14

Bronte is the surname of a trio of authors. It is a surname. It's not a name. I know surnames are somehow popular, but really, just no. It's so, so contrived.

Elodie is nicest, but my favourite is Leila, spelt Leila; not Layla.

HTH :)

littlepie · 04/01/2012 09:53

I love Cleo (DH vetoed this for DD2).

Elodie is also v nice.

Like Layla but is becoming more popular (if that bothers you).

Bronte, don't like it much, was my friend's dog's name and it smelt bad!

Motherofhobbit - Bronte is becoming relatively popular in Australia and is pronounced Bron-tee after the beach on the coast near Sydney. Most people pronounce the literary surname Bron-tay.

I've pretty much gone off it anyway and my husband is now dead set on Elodie so think that's what we'll go with. I'm just a bit concerned about how it goes with the names of our other children and getting the middle name right.
