Emily and Jessica? Would DD be one of many in her class when she goes to school? Does popularity put you off a name? Thanks!

According to national statistics, Emily was the second most popular girls name of 2011 and Jessica was the 12th most popular. So most likely one of several at school.

Popularity does put me off a name, though I think that's linked to being one of 5 in a class with the same name through my first 10 years of school (I kid you not), it didn't half make life difficult. Then in high school there were two of us, the other one was hugely popular and it seemed as though whenever I heard my name and turned around, someone said, 'no, not you, the other one!' Which of course they didn't mean anything by, but as a teenager it can be a bit... I don't know, saddening, for lack of a better word. Then I moved to London and I haven't met another person with my name since :)

Got an e-mail from Bounty this week with a list of 2011's top 100 names. Emily was in the top 5 if I remember rightly. We are using it for DD's middle name as if was DH's grandmas name and they were really really close

melliebobs · 31/12/2011 12:35

me and DH went through that list and 3 girls names (daisy, poppy, chloe) have been scrubbed off our list cos they were in the top 50. Now down to Laila (emphasis on the I) and Nancy

They are quite popular. Round here the real hotties are any variant of sophie or eve. A third of the girls in each of my dds classes have these names gets terribly confusing.

sonniebonnie · 31/12/2011 12:45

Yes, as others above have said. Both names are in the top 10 most popular names and will therefore be very widely used. So yes, there is a good chance that there will be others in their class/group with the same name. And yes, it can be very annoying/confusing. We give our children a name to identify them so a very widely used name will not achieve this purpose that well imo.

Just Google 'baby names' and 'national statistics office' to get the top 100 baby names for the last few years.
