Our 3 year old has a bit of difficulty pronouncing her sister's name so we thought a nickname would help. Is Nell okay or is it reserved for Helens?

Nell is fine. Or Lina would be perfectly acceptable too.

bemybebe · 30/12/2011 15:43

lena?

Vajazzler · 30/12/2011 15:50

Lenny?

oikopolis · 30/12/2011 15:53

Nell is completely acceptable. Helena and Helen are just versions of Eleni/e/a (Greek) in any case.

Though she'll probably find "Nenna" easiest -- not ideal, but my mother has a similar name and her little sister called (and still calls) her by a cute nickname. No-one else uses it, it's really sweet.

In the chalet school, Helena is always known as Len.

My great grandmother was Helena but not really shortened. My grandmother was Helen.

It's most likely that your 3 year old will find his own shortening, rather than needing one produced for him. My cousin Edward was known as eb or ebby by his brother for example. My dd is la-la and ds1 is mer (pronounced myrrh) by 2 yr old ds2. Neither shortening is particularly like their actual first name. Ds1 is called Tom! Not sure where that came from, unless was dd saying "toooommmmm-er" in stroppy 7 yr old fashion!

Shitemum · 30/12/2011 16:17

My MIL is called Helena and DD1 nicknamed her Nena when she was 18 months old. We still call her that.

ggirl · 30/12/2011 16:20

My dd's best friend is Helena, they are 19.
She is called Henny , Helz , Helly and Belz by her friends and family. Family mainly call her henny

My 13 year old Helen gets Melon from her friends sometimes, but doesn't mind. I like Nell though.

RillaBlythe · 30/12/2011 20:47

I like Nell. I have an aunt Helena who is Lina.

Clawdy · 31/12/2011 14:49

msbaublestwinkle · 31/12/2011 15:02

Our Helena is Len, because I have a Chalet school obsessed sister!

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 01/01/2012 05:30

Our almost three-year old calls his sister Lena.

Sannebanana · 01/01/2012 11:37

Nell is pretty :) I know a Helena who goes by Ellie, but there are loads of Ellies around at the moment.

helebeth · 03/01/2012 13:48

My family always called me ellie when I was younger. Now I am a mum myself people call me Helena but ellie has stuck with close friends and family.

helebeth · 03/01/2012 13:50

I love Nell, I am mostly known as Hels but would have loved to be called Nell.

Cardano · 04/01/2012 22:20

In Germany, it is usually Leni. (pronounced like Le-nee)

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 04/01/2012 22:30

Hen

I have a Helena in my school at the moment who is known as Lela (pn Leyla). I think it's quite sweet.

Lena

HintofBream · 06/01/2012 13:44

How do you mums of Helenas pronounce it?
Our DGD has it as a middle name, and to us it is "HelEEna" as opposed to Hellenna. This is because she is named in recognition of the island of St Helena, whence came her other GPs, and St Helena is always Heleena. I just wondered if most other people stuck to the H Bonham Carter version.

pooka · 06/01/2012 16:27

Helen-a

Is how we always pronounced my great grandmother's name.
