Hi ladies - DH and I are stuck in a rut trying to come up with a name for a baby boy. I like these 2 but need honest opinions on what you think of them

Alec
Stefan

Thank you all - and Merry Christmas :)

I love Alec, but I'm not so keen on Stefan.

LaFilleSurLePont · 24/12/2011 13:46

I prefer Stefan.Love it.

Alec is ok as a nickname, but it doesn't seem complete somehow as a first.

Kayano · 24/12/2011 13:46

Stefan

EdithWeston · 24/12/2011 13:48

Stefan.

Alec looks unfinished by itself, but is fine as nn for Alexander.

MamaMaiasaura · 24/12/2011 13:50

Stefan

Montsti · 24/12/2011 15:17

Not keen on Stefan and agree with others re: Alec...like Alexander though!

lottiegb · 24/12/2011 15:32

Like Stefan. Alec may be confused with Alex but is distinct really - and more upper class. Makes me think of the doctor from Brief Encounter.

tammytoby · 24/12/2011 17:09

In an English speaking country I'd use Stephen. Stefan in the Germanic version and sounds odd pronounced in English imo. Not sure about Alec, sounds like Alex with an 's' sound missing.

Acandlelitshadow · 24/12/2011 17:19

Alec will always spell Corrie's Alec Gilroy to me.

Not desperate about Stefan either so it seems I'm really no help. Sorry.

oikopolis · 24/12/2011 18:58

Stefan is all Germanic to me and people would pronounce it strangely.

Alec is more a nickname to me.

I would only go with Stephen or Alexander, sorry.

AnotherMincepie · 27/12/2011 17:59

Alec is a bit wet - Alex much nicer.
Stefan is quite nice, I'd assume there were connections outside the UK though.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 27/12/2011 22:40

Stefan. Both nice, though.

Angie03 · 28/12/2011 17:25

I like Stefan
I would prefer Alex (or Alexander) to Alec but I am probably biased because of an acquaintance called Alec who was not particularly nice...

serin · 29/12/2011 23:32

Sorry, Alec is a plump, bald bloke who plays golf.

Stefan is a young hunk who plays tennis Grin

EatingLemonCheesecake · 30/12/2011 21:29

There was a Stefan in my ds's class naughty as could be so im a bit off the name sorry and so many people including his family (mums is Russian) call him Stef which i love for girls didnt think so much for boys... Very much like Stephen though as someone suggested. I like Alex though but also agree with the many that Alexander (on birth cert anyways) seems more finished.

abittoofat · 31/12/2011 14:19

DS is Alec. By itself. Many people call him Alex without listening to what he says. ie, what's your name? Alec. So, Alex, ...... He's used to it now, but I think you need to be able to accept that.
At school, there was an Alex in his class, so people did differentiate, but I think he may have merged into an Alex otherwise.
It suits him, (skinny and sporty). Depends on surname as well of course.

abittoofat · 31/12/2011 14:22

Grin at lottiegb !!

howlongwilltheynap · 31/12/2011 18:08

I like Alec

nooka · 01/01/2012 04:33

I thought that Alec was a nn for Alasdair, but perhaps it is really only for Alexander. Given that neither name is mainstream English am I right in thinking that perhaps the OP or her dh has an Eastern European connection?

CecilyP · 01/01/2012 10:18

My FIL was Alec, short for Alexander. That was then further abbreviated to Eck, which was quite common for Scots of his generation.

DeeBeee · 06/01/2012 19:29

Thanks a lot for all the replies ladies - super helpful. Stefan was both my and my DH's granfather's name (yep, Eastern European) - but starting to think it would be better as a second name. Alec is indeed a version of Alexander...can't decide whether to go with the full version or the short. Guess the search continues...

I like Alec, not so keen on Stefan. Because of the 'Stef' for short.

PeanutButterCupCake · 06/01/2012 23:36

Don't like either sorry Blush Alex is nice

mathanxiety · 07/01/2012 08:23

Love them both. I know a little Stefan who is half Swedish. No-one has ever mispronounced it.

petitdonkey · 07/01/2012 08:33

I know a little Alec (Alexander) - it's lovely and just a little bit different whilst not 'out there'. I would name him Alexander but on all the birth announcements put (Alec) in brackets so people know that is your preferred nn.
Stefan just makes me think of Stefan Dennis from Neighbours who did that dodgy song.... 'Don't it make you feel good??' (Just me that remembers that one??)
