Girls name - we love it, but strong reaction from others!

I'm currently 38+5 with our first, we don't know if we're having a boy or a girl.

Both my partner and I love Coco for a girl, but when we've mentioned it as a possibility there have been some pretty strong reactions against, references to coco the clown etc.

DPs family are old school posh and much more accepting of unusual names, where as mine are east end working class and much more suspicious of anything exotic!

As a compromise we were thinking of going for Celeste Claudia and then using Coco as a nn, but don't want it to feel to contrived?

Our other possible girls name is Gala, and for a boy we like Finlay, Dexter or Rafe.

Would love your opinions on Coco, and whether we should just go for it or use it as a nn?

Stripper name.

umiaisha · 23/12/2011 12:04

My 5 year old DD is Coco. She does have a 'sensible' islamic middle name should she decide to swap them around when she is older.

Still love it!

ChocolatEtVin · 23/12/2011 13:31

I think it's lovely - the name we've chosen for next DC is positively hated on here but we still love it and that's what matters :)

mmmerangue · 23/12/2011 13:40

Celeste is a beautiful name... so is Coco! Ms Chanel comes to mind before any clown! But, kids and future bosses can be cruel...

My little boy is Nico-co-co so maybe I like it 'cos of that!

Gala is a town near me and I wouldn't name a kid after that dump I'm afraid, and Dexter my boyfriend liked for possible-next-boy-child but he did take it from a show about a serial killer so I'm not inclined...

CEDR · 23/12/2011 14:16

I think it's lovely. A little unusual but nice. It's weird..... If adults laugh at the name saying 'children will tease someone called coco', then they only have themselves to blame

FunnysInTheGarden · 23/12/2011 14:21

SOH I have a Raphael who is called Rafe too! So obv, Rafe out of your boys list, and I really like Coco, although CM dog is called CocoGrin I think choose a 'proper' name and use it as a nn. Celeste is lovely

FunnysInTheGarden · 23/12/2011 14:24

oh BTW Rafe isn't another way to pronounce Ralph. It is a short version of Raphael, prob german iirc

zingally · 23/12/2011 14:47

I can't imagine a 40 year old woman called Coco. It's cute when they're 3, but they won't thank you for it later.

lljkk · 23/12/2011 14:52

Coco is awful, sorry to owners of same. Chocolate drink, usually a cheap quality one. Or a Pomeranian dog.

Cecilia I like much better than Celeste. Celeste is a brand name for something.

mmmerangue · 23/12/2011 14:57

lol i had Cileste - they're birth control pills. Had totally forgotten...

hohohoshedittant · 23/12/2011 15:07

Coco is quite sweet as a nickname, but she should have a proper name as well. I know a Chloe who is nn Coco. Quite like Celeste not keen on Claudia. I think Coralie is nice and could be nn Coco.

Gala? Just no.

Love Finlay, Rafe is ok, to me Dexter is a dogs name.

OliNIvy · 23/12/2011 15:11

I liked that name when i was about 14.

Its not great, sorry. In my opinion, of course. Its whimsical and silly. Not even Chanel was really called Coco. I imagine Jordan calling her next child this, to be frank.

But your child, your choice!

OliNIvy · 23/12/2011 15:12

Celeste is marvellous, though!

lottiegb · 23/12/2011 15:49

Gala = Picasso's muse and celebrations, wonderful. Surely only about 1% of the population pays any attention to bingo halls?

Coco is lovely as a nickname, I think of Chanel and lovely chocolatiness. I like Claudia and Celeste and Cordelia.

mizu · 23/12/2011 15:55

I like it. I teach English and have a lovely Spanish lady in my class called Consuelo but we all call her Coco.

oikopolis · 23/12/2011 16:42

Coco is a lovely nickname. There are soooo many lovely names that you could use it with...

Coralie
Cordelia
Claudia (as you've already suggested)
Corinne
Colette
Colombe
Cosima

Also, Coco is a traditional nickname for Nicole and Nicolette, which are both beautiful.

...or use any "C" name!

greenmoo · 23/12/2011 16:56

No! It's a porn star's name.

JinglePosyPerkin · 23/12/2011 17:10

OP - where as mine are east end working class and much more suspicious of anything exotic!

So will they cope with Celeste, Gala or Rafe then? Xmas Smile.

My point being that whatever name you choose, someone will always find something negative to say about it. IMHO it is better to choose the name you love (unless it's bordering on child abuse like Bibbly-Bobbly-Boo for example) than to have a lifetime's regret about settling for something you like less but others consider more "acceptable".

FWIW, I love the name Coco but really don't like Celeste. Claudia is OK. Also, I really don't like Rafe - sounds like you are trying to be too upper class.

mathanxiety · 23/12/2011 17:22

Celeste is the name of an elephant, a cousin of Babar. It is a perfect name for an elephant imo.

Celestine is maybe a bit better? Or would you consider Chantal Claudia? All of Oikopolis' suggestions are lovely..

Gala is horrible, and is pronounced differently in different parts of the world to boot. (Gay-la, Ga-LAH).

Coco is nice, imo.

LaFilleSurLePont · 23/12/2011 19:08

Coco is utterly ridiculous as a first name, but just about ok as a nickname.

Celeste is beautiful.

breatheslowly · 23/12/2011 20:40

Gala makes me think of melon.

Coco - nah, too Chanel

Gala - I think of 'apple'

I like Claudia.

Finlay for a boy :)

hohohoshedittant · 24/12/2011 03:25

'Surely only about 1% of the population pays any attention to bingo halls?'

It's got to be more than that surely! With all the bingo halls, adverts for bingo, online bingo and here we have a special 'bingo bus'....

I would bet more people play bingo than know about Picasso's muse.
