StNicksNackered · 20/12/2011 20:08

as in Rat?

No I don't think it's back in fashion.

lljkk · 20/12/2011 20:09

Roland would be ... brave? Xmas Wink

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/12/2011 20:09

No idea if it's back in fashion but I do think it's due a revival.

CuppaTeaJanice · 20/12/2011 20:10

She obviously never watched Grange Hill!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/12/2011 20:11

Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came Yum.

CrotchFlakes · 20/12/2011 20:38

But Roland Hmm

Not a family name either.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 20/12/2011 20:41

Grange Hill, the rat & synthesisers, that's what Roland says to me!

nancy75 · 20/12/2011 20:42

you must pronounce it Ro land like the girl did on grange hill, any other way is wrong!

lucky24 · 20/12/2011 20:47

I quite like it

PercyFilth · 20/12/2011 21:14

I like it. A noble name.

Meglet · 20/12/2011 21:15

Good name.

Makes me think of Roland from Grange Hill.

PercyFilth · 20/12/2011 21:36

And Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 20/12/2011 22:56

I adore this name - The Song of Roland Smile. DH vetoed it on grounds of the duffer from Grange Hill.

Liluri · 20/12/2011 22:57

I like it.
My DS1 has a friend called Roland - he is v cool.

ThoseClementineShoes · 21/12/2011 11:07

Remember on my first day of a new job looking for a very senior member of
staff. Asked by title and last name and everyone was like "who?!" until eventually someone twigged and said "Oh!!! Roley!!!" was a very nice moment. And he was lovely.

My dad's first name is Rowland (though it's not the name he's called by), and I've always rather liked it...I'd use Rollo as a nn, but memories of Ro-land from Grange Hill means it's probably doomed forever!

DressingGownSnowQueen · 21/12/2011 11:13

Sorry but my first thought was 'rat'?

Then I giggled for a while.

However I do like Rollo as a nn.

CrotchFlakes · 21/12/2011 14:14

Rollo is fine - in fact, I'd use it as a proper name anyway and certainly in preference to Ro-land.

Are there people in their thirties who have not heard of Roland Rat or watched Grange Hill?

OP posts:
PurpleWithaBlueBun · 21/12/2011 14:19

I have a fancy for Roland as I love Roly and Rollo as NN but I don't think it will happen.
I don't really know Roland Rat myself have heard of it only and by the time he is older I don't it will have any relevance at all.

PercyFilth · 21/12/2011 14:31

Why would it matter? What is more to the point is whether the child's contemporaries will have heard of them, and I would say the answer is No.

Worrying about this kind of association is always pointless though. By the time a child is old enough to go to school, who knows what new characters may have sprung up in TV shows and the like.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 21/12/2011 14:41

I am in my twenties, and have barely heard of Roland Rat and didn't watch Grange hill due to it being boring, really don't think it is going to matter!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 21/12/2011 14:42

I agree with you Percy :)

lisianthus · 22/12/2011 17:55

Never heard of Roland Rat or Roland from Grange Hill (foreigner). I associate it with the Childe Roland and middle ages stuff. Lovely name.

zingally · 23/12/2011 14:52

I have an uncle called Rowland.
"Roland" is the French spelling, "Rowland" is the English version.

I'm not hugely keen on it, but I teach a Raymond, and that's grown on me.
