Is my DS's name too politically charged?

My Czech-Jewish grandmother's surname was Hayek, so I was a little surprised that my DH suggested that as our son's name, seeing as I didn't remember telling him that. I accepted, and added little Hayek to our family.

Years after the fact, my DH, a Thatcherite who tried several times to convince me to name our daughter "Margaret", tells me that, in fact, he didn't know about my grandmother, and was thinking of naming our son after an economist by that name.

I'm a Tory myself, so I don't mind as much as I could, and, as far as I'm concerned, it's after my grandmother regardless. But could it be perceived as a politically-charged name? I've never had any comments on it.

To be honest it would make me think of Salma first.

Well, the (over!) educated among us may raise an eyebrow if you share the inspiration. But I really don't think most people have heard of Hayek! I would just assume you had EE heritage. I quite like it.

Btw, your husband must be a helluva right winger...

MarleneOnTheWall · 19/12/2011 17:00

I don't think you need to be overly educated to have heard of Hayek but I hear the name in the context of Salma Hayek much more frequently than the economist Hayek whose first name I actually can't even think of.

Is this about calling your DD Margaret?

There are about 8 Margarets where I work. They are all women of a certain age (twas v popular in the 40s and 50s) and some of them are left wing, so no I wouldn't automatically associate it with Margaret Thatcher.

Just trying not to sound snotty, Marlene...!

i think you're over-thinking this!

i doubt many people will make the association, and if they do that doesn't mean they'll think you named him after that Hayek

I don't think it's really "politically-charged" at all tbh

Ephiny · 19/12/2011 18:55

I agree you're over-thinking it, I certainly wouldn't have made any political association and I doubt most people would. I would find it an odd choice for a first name though, I've only ever heard it as a surname.

Hayek - dreadful dreadful dreadful economist. But I guess it is only Lefties like me who'd wonder.

Isn't it a bit of an old ladies name?
