Literary Names

I'm a writer and wanted to pick a name that shows my connection to literature, but cant think of anything I like!

I suggested some names from LOTR and from Shakespeare to my husband, but he thought the LOTR ones were too wierd and the Shakers ones were too mainstream to be obvious where they were from.

I need a boys name that says "From a famous book" like Sherlock, but not quite so odd. Does that make sense?

LadyMetroland · 19/12/2011 21:28

Guy

(as in Guy Crouchback)

NotnOtter · 19/12/2011 21:33

Nightstar i am shocked that your dp thought the shakespearean ones too mainstream...there are sooo many

ds has a shakespearean name i think it appears in about 6 works ( including poetry) and the Iliad but no one has ever heard of it.

NotnOtter · 19/12/2011 21:39

'self indulgent' the poster that said that must have got her next door neighbour to name the baby i assume!

lovely idea a literary name!

ChineapplePunk · 19/12/2011 22:28

There are lots of different ways of naming a child and gathering inspiration. We see it on the baby names thread all the time. Don't listen to those who regard you as using an "incorrect" and "self indulgent" way of naming your child, Nighstar. I think this is a great thread, and my favourite boy's name (the one I think I'm definitely going to use) has already been suggested. :)

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 19/12/2011 22:33

broccolitrees (and Lockets) - you are forgetting Artemis Fowl, that teen evil genius from the pen of Eoin Colfer. HE is a boy called Artemis - I expect that's where the confusion arose Xmas Grin so not just baby brain!

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 19/12/2011 22:34

(Of course, Artemis Fowl isn't really evil at all, he's just a master criminal, which were the words I should have used)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/12/2011 23:40

Love the phrase, 'Reading like a demon.' Wonder how exactly a demon reads, as I suspect the pages must get rather singed! :)

broccolitrees · 20/12/2011 06:30

Thank you thumb Xmas Grin although I will confess, I was thinking musketeers and meant Aramis

OrwellianNightmare · 20/12/2011 08:06

Doesn't the phrase come from the fact demons are anything but slow? I'd imagine a demon reads very quickly. Like Johnny No 5. I never picture them as being on fire though.

OP how about ancient greek mythology and poetry? Many names to tap there, some in common use today...

Really fab list fanjodisfunction!

And thank you guys for the nicer comments! I already had lots of ideas but just thought it would be fun to pick other peoples brains for stuff I hadnt thought of. And apart from a few really catty people it was fun to see what literary names you guys came up with, and some of them were really excellent names!

Of course I will use a name that comes from a book or writer that means something to me, it was simply a thread for extra inspiration x

OP posts:
LaTristesse · 21/12/2011 20:37

If mine was a boy he would have been Soren (Kierkegaard). any good?

thepeoplesprincess · 22/12/2011 00:17

Actually I do agree with the bitchy posters tbh.

If you're picking a name that's unique and beautiful to your tastes, then you shouldn't need inspiration from others.

My kids both have ridiculously poncey arty-farty names, but I chose them myself and I couldn't care less if anybody else likes them or not

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 22/12/2011 00:36

It would be kind of pleasing to persuade the OP to name her son after the cock in Chaucer's Nun's Priest's Tale. Chaunticleer is a good strong name. You could call him Chauni for short.

ChineapplePunk · 22/12/2011 01:48

For crying out loud. One of the main purposes of a baby names thread is to discuss names, get ideas, and garner inspiration. If you don't need or want it, then fine. But I fail to see why some people have to have a go at Nightstar for using the baby names thread to knock around a few ideas with others. Good grief!

ninah · 22/12/2011 01:54

For me it would have to be Ted
pmsl at Yorick though

eandz · 22/12/2011 01:58

Dh wants to name our first daughter "Saraphine" from golden compass.

IslaDoit · 22/12/2011 02:05

Benedict. Lovely name, great play (As You Like It) and can be shortened to Ben so you can still send him to the local comp should you so wish Grin

I don't really know what to make of the posters on here decrying the discussion of Baby Names on the Baby Names board. Have you forgotten where you are? Wink

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 22/12/2011 02:45

I'm really sorry but there is something quite farcical about this whole idea.

"What's your baby called?"

"He's called HEMINGWAY. As in BOOKS."

IslaDoit · 22/12/2011 02:47

Gosh, if you haven't anything nice to say...

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 22/12/2011 02:49

Oh come on, it's just a bit silly. Really not a big deal.

IslaDoit · 22/12/2011 02:52

I'm sure you don't mean to be but it just sounds a bit nasty. There's a pregnant woman asking for literary type names. She likes LOTR and Shakespeare. It's really no different to someone who likes floral names asking for help or someone who likes French names asking for help.

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 22/12/2011 02:59

Most of us on here are pregnant, that's why we're looking for baby names!

I'm sorry if it came across as nasty. It just strikes me as a little bit funny, that's all. I'll shut up now.

IslaDoit · 22/12/2011 03:09

Sorry i didn't mean to be all board monitor-ish. I wouldn't have said anything but the OP already mentioned she was feeling a bit sad about the other comments.

Obviously if she goes for Hemingway she should expect some ribbing Grin
