Names with Lori as a nickname?

I'm liking the name Lori, but as someone who went through several variations of her name throughout my childhood/teenage years, I'd like to be able pick a name that gives my daughter the same flexibility. So I'm wondering for what names could Lori be a nickname for?

I've thought of a few, but they all seem to have some sort of problems. I'm interested to hear how worrying people think the problems might be, or not be, and whether there are any other possibilities I haven't thought of.

Here are my current ideas:
Lorelei - I quite like this one, but I hear that it is hard to pronounce/spell
Lorianne - but too easily seen as "Lorraine" instead?
Lorelyn - there appears to be a huge number of ways to spell this (e.g., Lorilen, Lorilynn, Lorelynne, Laurelin, and any other variation one could think of). I imagine my daughter could spend her life spelling her name with this one...

Hannelore - same problems as Lorelei, but probably worse
Hannelori - more likely to be pronounced correctly than Hannelore, but not the traditional spelling and would probably get attention/criticism for that.

And then, as I'm not originally British, how much should I worry about the sound similarity to the word "lorry"?

I know a Laureen. She gets Lori (Lauri) as a nn.

Llorien - I know one and she is gorgeous Xmas Grin

Lori is fine, and I wouldn't have thought of a truck unless pointed out.

Also: Laura, Lauren, Florence?

IJustWannaBeMe · 17/12/2011 10:26

You've missed the obvious Loretta too. Can be Etta/Ettie

And I've known an Italian, Loridana - a variety of small bird, I believe - have always liked this name. Could be Dana/Dani if she prefers one day.

Loribel/Lorabelle? Could be Bel/Belle. Not so keen on this, a bit LittleHouseonthePrariesSpoiltGirl.

hocuspontas · 17/12/2011 10:31

I'd stick with Lori. I think it's better spelt as Laurie though. As she gets older her friends will think of tons of nicknames for her! Lol, Lorz, Lor-lor, etc... Grin

Hi, this is ardenbird's husband, and the future daddy. In addition to suggestions, we would appreciate your thoughts on the ideas she mentioned above. I would especially like to know what you think of:

Hannelore / Hannelori
(that was my favourite when I was in high school studying German. The first is the normal German spelling, the second is our attempt to make it easier for English speakers to pronounce)

Laurelin
(which my wife likes and I might be good with myself, for the really geeky (which includes me) it has a Tolkien connection, does it seem like a reasonable name)

BornToBeRiled · 18/12/2011 18:59

Definitely lorelai. Gorgeous name. Not hard to pronounce imo. Love it.

lljkk · 18/12/2011 19:05

I really don't like Lorien, sorry, but it sounds like Lauren gone wonky.

Another vote for Lorelai, I don't think it is that hard to spell (& normally I'm the first to moan if a name is awkward to spell/say).

Lorraine is good, too.

talkingnonsense · 18/12/2011 19:11

What about Laurel, Laura or Lauren?

greenday11 · 18/12/2011 20:11

Not sure about either tbh - quite like Laurel as suggested above - what about Heidi?

Laurie is more often than not a boys name in the UK and agree makes me think of an articulated lorry ie not very girly! Smile

BliggOfTheDump · 18/12/2011 22:32

Lorenza - Italian female version of Laurence.

NorkyPiesWithJingleBellsOn · 18/12/2011 22:36

Greenday, when I was at school another girl told me she had a boyfried. She spelled out his name -LORRY. I then knew she was lying (not that I would have been impressed anyway).

workshy · 18/12/2011 22:37

how would you pronounce Lori

would it be like lorry or lor-rie

I have a cousin pronounced lor-rie (spelt laurie)

she is actually called felicity! -go figure???

mythical · 18/12/2011 22:43

Where i come from Lori is used as a nickname for Loredana

ThoseClementineShoes · 18/12/2011 23:20

Love Florence or Gloria.

What about Elorah?

ThoseClementineShoes · 18/12/2011 23:21

Oh and I would find Hannelore easier to pronounce. I do like this one.

KatAndKit · 19/12/2011 09:39

I'd go for Lorelai, Laurence, or the above suggestion of Loredana.

AwayinaKayzr · 19/12/2011 10:01

I love Lorelai.

I know a Lorna who gets called Lori all the time.

perfumedlife · 19/12/2011 10:05

If you like Lori so much, why not just call her Lori? Xmas Confused

I think it's a bit contrived to pre plan a nik name tbh.

perfumedlife · 19/12/2011 10:06

Just remembered, I know a Lorraine who got called Raine, no one ever shortened it to Lori.

IJustWannaBeMe · 19/12/2011 12:32

I like Hannelore but would shorten to Hanne... I'd go with the proper spelling and get her to accept/politely correct mispronunciations. I have a daughter with a hard to pronounce name (it's Gaelic), and we have this all the time (and we gave her a more straightforward middle name so she can use it if need/preference arose, but it hasn't).

I like Lorelin, yes that would be fine, but I love Laurel (though they'll be correcting from Lauren a lot, but that's no reason not to, you just have to teach child to expect/accept that. All my kids have this with their names). And Loredana.

BlueChampagne · 19/12/2011 13:25

Leonora
