it is a name in it's own night and it is currently the only one i have suggested to DH this time around that he doesn't say 'cant have it in UK'

So what do you think?

Adil?

lisaro · 14/12/2011 23:57

Really don't like it I'm afraid. It's not a name I've heard of either.

boatdeliah · 15/12/2011 00:05

don't think an arabic name would go down well back home barry :P

it means jewel/ornament.
it is unisex but DH thinks it would be better for a girl in the UK

What about Ade, after Ade Mafe one of my favourite British atheletes.

meditrina · 15/12/2011 00:16

I thought first of the boy who is one of Sunita and Dev's twins in Corrie, though that is spelt Aadi.

hohohoshedittant · 15/12/2011 01:19

How is it pronounced? Ah-dee? Ay-dee?

I know an Ah-dee, not sure how he spells it though.

and there's Ade Adepitan the basketball player he's British, he pronounces it Ah-dee as well.

I like it.

Janoschi · 15/12/2011 02:55

Adi is the short form of Adolf.... just thought I'd throw that in!

nooka · 15/12/2011 03:20

Seems a bit incomplete to me. Makes me think of Aldi.

I guess if you are Israeli (back home?) then it's more of a real name, but to me it seems very nicknamy and after wondering if it was a boy or girl I'd be wondering what it was short for (I think I'd expect a boy and probably guess Adrian, because of Ade Edmondson).

broccolitrees · 15/12/2011 07:00

i know a little girl called addie (add-ee) and i like it.

not sure i like it for a boy and also i read adi as ay-dee and short for aidan or adrian/adrien, neither of which i particularly like either

JimbosJetSet · 15/12/2011 07:05

Yes, I read Aldi when I first saw it, sorry.

twitterer · 15/12/2011 17:22

How about Adam with Adi as a nickname?

upahill · 15/12/2011 17:25

One mate is pronounced Add - dee

Another is just known as Adds!

IndigoBell · 15/12/2011 17:25

Are you looking for a boys name or a girls name or a unisex name?

Ada for a girl is nice. (Especially if she's a computer programmer :) )

boatdeliah · 15/12/2011 19:36

yep nooka Israeli.

and ah-dee.

Adam is a no go - and actually most of the names like that.

And as lovely as most of those other names are they aren't hebrew.

Oh I haven't heard this name for years!

I really, really like it

rubyslippers · 15/12/2011 19:38

The boy knew with it was Israeli and he was gorgeous

helpmabob · 15/12/2011 19:40

It was one of my favourite names as a choice for my ds. I love it. I know it as Israeli but think it is common in other cultures too. I remember there was a character on Easterenders called Adi (which did put me off a bit).

ChestnutsREASTIEingOnTheFire · 15/12/2011 19:40

Erm, I misread this initially as 'Aldi' Shock Blush

TheFallenMadonna · 15/12/2011 19:41

All the Adis I know are short for Adnan.

RetroMuff · 15/12/2011 19:42

I used to know an Adi (from Israel) and he was lovely, so I'm biased and love the name.

Casmama · 15/12/2011 19:43

Sorry I saw Aldi as well.

nooka · 16/12/2011 06:37

Pronounced Ah-dee makes it seem more like a boys name than a girls name to me, although the 'i' ending is probably more associated with girls.

nursenic · 16/12/2011 06:48

Adrian's were shortened to Adi when I were a child....Smile

tammytoby · 16/12/2011 07:30

I like Adi. I know an adult one. Also know an Avi.
People will get used to it.

cumbria81 · 16/12/2011 15:15

I know an Adey (african name) and an Adi (short for Aidan)
