I love it, I think - DH hates it

he actually hates every girl's name I have suggested so far:

Tess
Gwendoline
Imogen
Catrin
Alex (for a girl)

He likes Polly (I don't)

help...

Don't like it.

Brings to mind the Police song about a prostitute. I'm a Police fan and like the song but it's a very well known reference and I wouldn't want my daughter's name forever associated with a prostitute.

I love it. My SIL is called Roxanne, and when I first met her I was Hmm as her brother (my DH) and sis have exceptionally normal, straightlaced names. Think MIL just decided to be a little 'reckless' on her last baby.

SHe gets Roxy, which I prefer, and it totally suits her.

BTW I also love Tess (on my list) and did love Imogen until I heard someone call after their daughter Imogen "Mo-Mo, come here" I nearly cried.

Love Polly too, though!

What about Pippa?

beautiful and classical, even if some associate it only with the "police" song Grin

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 14/12/2011 01:56

I hate it, sorry. Way too 80s - in a bad way.

two4one · 14/12/2011 03:02

God, no. Unless you want people to screech "Roooooooooooooooxanne" at her for the rest of her life.

Also reminds me of a woman I used to work with who insisted on people pronouncing it Rox-arne and spoke very affectedly.

Love Polly. My DH has vetoed it. He says, what as in "Lunn?"

KatAndKit · 14/12/2011 07:36

I'm sorry, the first thing I thought of was prostitute. Off your list I like Tess and Imogen. Not fond of Polly but don't hate it.

MudAndGlitter · 14/12/2011 07:38

I have Alexandra. We use Alex, Lex or Lexie as a nn.

Although when she's playing up her full name becomes Alexandra stop that now

MudAndGlitter · 14/12/2011 07:39

I like polly but it's a nirvana song
Roxane made me think of red lights

nizlopi · 14/12/2011 09:51

I think if you named a girl Roxanne she might get a lot of 'put on the red light' jokes. I know that thats the first thing I think of when I hear that name. Sting ruined a good name there. Good job he's sexy.

Marinn · 14/12/2011 11:17

I think it's too harsh and 80's sounding, in the same group as Charlene and Donna.

PercyFilth · 14/12/2011 12:01

I think you could take it a step away from the song association with Roxana or Roxanna.

ConstanceNoring · 14/12/2011 12:05

Sorry, me too on thinking about the prostitute in the Police song.

EatMeDates · 14/12/2011 14:01

I much prefer Roxanna/Roxana. I know a little Roxy (just Roxy). Sweet but spunky.

Love Tess, Alex and Gwendoline, btw! And Polly is nice, too (sorry).

EatMeDates · 14/12/2011 14:03

To be honest, Roxanne the song isnt going to be a well known cultural reference for your DDs age group, is it? I wouldnt bother about that at all. Most Sting fans will be one foot in the grave by then Wink

LaTristesse · 14/12/2011 21:10

I like Roxanne, but Roxy is all a bit Eastenders for my liking...

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/12/2011 21:21

Rosssssssss can!

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 14/12/2011 21:22

What about Roseanne? Or is that just another 80s reference too far?

aStarOverMangerways · 14/12/2011 21:25

arf ABF Grin

Roxanne was my favourite name for ages when I was a teenager. Still do like it now actually, and I say that as a big Police fan - think the whole song-association worry thing is overplayed, I mean how many little Lolas are there running around without every single person making a Kinks comment?

Saying that, I do like Polly a lot as well. Also Tess, Catrin, Alex, although Imogen and Gwendoline could happily be lost from your list.

Bibbo · 14/12/2011 21:52

OK I hear you! Think the EastEnders link killed it for me.

DH has actually conceded that Tess is a nice name - but says she'll get called 'Tess Tickles' !!

He knew a girl at school called Tess, and that is what he called her, the git
