Another list - this time more unusual...

So, delaying TTC as I have just got a new job (whoo hoo!), but I still LOVE thinking baby names, so bear with me.....

We have a Matilda - love her name.

I normally go for classic-ish names, but hate anything ponce-y, and I find there's a fine line... The name we had planned as no2, if it were a girl, is the name of my new boss' youngest and, as I will be working so closely with him, I am afraid that rules it out as it would just come accress as weird.

On the plus side, with my new job, we're moving somewhere where I feel more confident to choose an "unusual" name (I know, I know, but yes, I do care what people think and at the moment I am in a very conservative (with a small c) little bubble, but we're escaping to the country - yay!!!).

Again, being perfectly honest (and again, I am likely to get flamed for this), I don't care too much if a name seems "chavvy"... I would rather that than sounding, well, pretentious. (This is the bit I'll getflamed for...) our children will have very minor titles ("the hon") which we'd never dream of using but, somewhat irrationally, sort of us gives us the freedom to be chavvy if we want, becasue we're not... if you see what I mean (ducks and hides.. Blush).

So, opinions by all means, but also suggestions please!

Esther (nn Hetty)
Hesper
Kezia
Greta
Valentina
Astrid
Grace

William (I'm not a huge fan - a bit dull)
Frank (family name, but honest opinions fine!)
Sebastian (poncy I fear)
Xavier (same)
Arthur
Theo
And I'm struggling with boys......

Ha, I think you're right about being able to get away with things when status is beyond question - in terms of mindset as much as titles, comfort and confidence vs aspiration.

Anway, I like all your girls names. Not Hester? Like Kezia(h)

Francis for Frank? I think Sebastian might be a bit overused. Rafael, Rufus, Reuben, Fabian, Gabriel, Dorian - all a bit 'poncy', if you like, but nice where they'll fit in. Sylvester?

welcome to the country legallyblond... we left London a few months ago and the weight has just lifted. Hurrah! I agree with you on names..rather have pretentious sounding name but that's just me {takes cover}

Hetty is sweet but i'd go for Harriet etc
Hesper - sounds like a coughsweet Blush
Kazia - Not with Matilda
Valentina - Really lovely, i like. But not keen on Val..which i'm sure it would become
Grace - Pretty name, however not keen due to old work colleague.

William - Great name..
Frank - Francis IMO would be better would Frankie as a nn
Sebastian - Not poncy
Xavier - On my list (DH won't have it, git) Lovely name.
Arthur - Also on my list..so thumbs up from me.
Theo - Mmm not sure about this one...Matilda and Theo, sounds good.

What about:
Herbie (m/f)
Alexander as the nn
Hugh or Hugo
Petra
Esther
Imogen

Of your list Matilda and William or Matilda and Grace.

scarlettlips · 13/12/2011 09:56

LaFilleSurLePont · 13/12/2011 10:37

Esther is lovely.
I don't like Hesper or Kezia.
Greta is nice.
Valentina is ok.
Don't like Astrid.
Grace is lovely.

William is very nice.
Frank is hideous. I can't imagine calling a lovely newborn 'Frank'.
Sebastian is lovely and not 'poncy' imho.
Xavier is ok.
Don't like Arthur.
Love Theo.

Thanks all - and yes, HUGE HURRAHS for finally escaping London! Am reeling with the thrill of it all. We move in a couple of months... counting down the days.....

Love the idea of Fitzwilliam...! But not sure I dare!

Oh, and adore Petra - thanks for that! Straight on the list!

I like Otto, but it sounds too German, doesn't it? We're not in any way exotic - just plain vanilla English.

Glad I didn't get flamed re the whole not minding about sounding chavvy cos we're not thing. Just being honest!

Otto is lovely. I'd use it even if you don't have German heritage.

AnotherMincepie · 13/12/2011 11:51

I like Esther, Grace, William and Theo (short for Theodore)

Theodore William or Esther Grace :)

EatMeDates · 13/12/2011 12:05

I love Esther, Greta, Grace and Valentina. Lovely, lovely names.

Hesper is a bit odd.

Not keen on Astrid or Kezia.

I like Sebastian and don't think its poncey at all. Others are OK, but not madly keen on any of them. Frank is a bit harsh sounding.

Boys :

Elliot
Wilbur
Rufus
Amos
Orson
Francis rather than Frank? Frankie or Frank could be nn
Edward
Tobias
Johan
Gabriel
Harlan
Nathaniel
Dalziel
Ferdinand
Benedict
Asa
Clarence
Lucian
Ralph
Seth Thaddeus / Thad
Anuerin
Orlando
Laurence nn Laurie (love this and keep suggesting it on MN!)

have to have a rest before I think up any girls names, that was exhausting Grin

comedaygoday · 13/12/2011 12:06

I quite like all the names you have suggested, although my preferred ones are Esther.and Arthur. I would not use Fitzwilliam unless your DH's name is William.

EatMeDates · 13/12/2011 12:08

Etta
Nell
Stella
Flora
Helene
Polly
Clara
Ida
Cora
Harriet nn Hattie
Thora
Celeste

TheCatInTheHairnet · 13/12/2011 12:11
