Hoskins or Hosking

It is a family middle name. But as names do they get changed/altered though the years by people and spellings

So both appear in members of my family as middle names - always a middle name for a boy (I presume someone once married one and used it as a middle name for a son - but that is pretty far back)

So I'll open it up to you lot

Hoskins or Hosking

?

Well, either! Not helpful, sorry.

You could start your own variant of the tradition with Hoskin?

ShengdanRoad · 11/12/2011 04:51

Drop it altogether. It sounds like a tramp with a big furry beard.

Well both are surnames that sound like surnames. I do think Hoskin sounds better as a mn.

glidingthrough · 11/12/2011 19:04

Well to my knowledge the people I have known to have it as a mn have never had a big furry beard (or a beard of any description) or been tramps at any point in their lives

Well it is a surname (and has never been used as a fn in my family) and have no problem with a surname as a mn - I have one and I love it plus a lot of surnames are also fn and vise versa.

Fair point about Hoskin but I actually kind of wanted one of those 2 versions that are in my family. Ta

Of the two, I'd go for Hoskins.

picalooo · 11/12/2011 19:47

what is the most recent version used - ie if you have a brother what does he have or your dad or uncle?
Use that one.

hohohoshedittant · 11/12/2011 20:19

Which is worse? Hosking

but both dire so I'm not sure it'll make that much difference tbh

Will he have two mn? Like a proper name mn and then a surname mn or just Hoskins.

elephantsgomarching · 11/12/2011 20:25

Think I would do as picalooo said and pick the one used most recently

ThatsNotSantasBabyBelly · 11/12/2011 20:36

Hosking ends properly for a middle name I think

dreamingofsun · 11/12/2011 20:38

its a garden centre isn't it?

mathanxiety · 11/12/2011 20:55

Hosking sounds more like a verb -- something obscure and old fashioned and agricultural. Or maybe something from the world of Morris dancing.

I would pick Hoskins.

toobilly · 13/12/2011 14:03

Hosking

JedwardThreesome · 13/12/2011 14:05

Bob

boatdeliah · 14/12/2011 00:22

Hosking I think might depend on the first name.
