What are some boy names that are not over used but are still recognizable as names?

I love names like Jack, Ben, Will, etc, but they're all so overused! What are some boys' names that don't seem made up or ridiculous, but are still nice and wouldn't lead to a lifetime of being the tenth of that name in the class?

I like Peter for this reason...I don't know any little boys with this name but it's still a name iyswim.

Have a look at the ONS list from last year - it lists ALL the boys names that were used and there are lots of lovely normal names outside of the top 100.

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 19:57

What's that? :)

It is a list the UK government produce that lists ALL baby names given in a certain year (well, all those used at least 2 or 3 times I think). I haven't got the link to hand at the moment but will see if I can find it for you.

I love Peter! But it's my dad's name so felt a bit ott. My boys are Nathaniel, xander and Dominic (now outed!)

TheLaminator · 09/12/2011 20:02

Otis. Unusual but definately a boys name.
We love it DS1 & it is never questioned as a name itself, sometimes people ask about origin, but not often.
Also like Max.

PelvicFloorOfHighTensileTinsel · 09/12/2011 20:02

ons lists in the excel spreadsheet you have to go to about the 5th tab o get the full list.

TheLaminator · 09/12/2011 20:03

I like Peter too :)

PelvicFloorOfHighTensileTinsel · 09/12/2011 20:07

I remember being surprised how low down the list Simon is (275), I would have expected it to be top 100. Is that the kind of thing you're after?

KateBeckett · 09/12/2011 20:07

I love Christopher, but DP sadly doesn't...

LePruneDeMaTante · 09/12/2011 20:09

What about John?
I know, Bruce. Surely due a comeback?

PelvicFloorOfHighTensileTinsel · 09/12/2011 20:09

Only thing is these are England and Wales stats so you might find different names are underused in America.

latrucha · 09/12/2011 20:11

Nicholas?

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 20:31

I do like Nicholas but our last name is Brick. (I know we're not supposed to put names, but if any stalker is dedicated enough to come to my teeny town in America, I salute them :o ) Nick Brick is a no-go.

I love Peter (esp Peter Bishop from Fringe Blush) but here it is a minor euphemism for penis. So. A bit dodgy.

My DS is Sam (uel). I'm not pregnant but DH and I seriously talking about it, and it took us ages to nail down DS's name, so I'm thinking about it! So far the only boy's name we really both like is Charles nn Charlie. He likes Alexander but it's experiencing freakish popularity here right now, I know at least ten Alex's under the age of nine or so.

My son is called Iain (the scottish spelling) after his grandad Ian. There isn't another in his school (I think) and we got few funny looks as a baby but now at 13 it's a good name to be growing into. Glad we picked it anyway.

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 20:34

Kate I really like Christopher too but not Chris. Same with Thomas/Tom, Patrick/Pat...thought couldn't go with Patrick Brick anyway! :)

That's another thing in Peter's favor...I don't mind Pete. Seems like an off-hand, sunny little name to me. :)

Michael
Mark
Thomas
Jonathan (personal fave)
James

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 20:44

I also like Robert nn Bobby, but we already used Robert as DS's middle name as it's my Dad's name.

Drew
Daniel (my DS)
Edward

Takver · 09/12/2011 21:09

There's lots of good Welsh boys names - which might be uncommon in the States? I like
Rhys (ten a penny here, but its a great name)
Ianto
Gareth
Cai
Owain
Aron
Bryn

Takver · 09/12/2011 21:10

Oops- maybe not Bryn Brick Grin Owain Brick has a good ring to it though . . .

Takver · 09/12/2011 21:11

There are other shortenings of Christopher of course - Kit, Kester and Christy are all pretty classy IMHO

GibberingGinger · 09/12/2011 21:18

How about Andrew, Douglas, Michael or Daniel. All seem quite similar to Peter to me, and all have good shortened versions. I love Doug or Dougie

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 21:19

Those are nice Takver. I particularly like Rhys and it's on our list.

Christy and Bryn are definitely girl's names here...I was almost Brynn Elizabeth, so very nearly was Brynn Brick!

Owain Brick does have a nice ring...it's our nephew's name. :o (Well, Owen.)

Peter is indeed ace.

CheerfulYank · 09/12/2011 21:20

Michael and Daniel are my uncles, Andrew is DH, and Doug is one of my cousins. :o I like your train of thought though Gibbering!
