Dh wanted to find out the sex of dc2 so that we could decide on a name, however with 8 weeks to go we are no further along Xmas Hmm

I am all for unusual names and managed to get my way with dd, Xmas Wink this time however as its a boy dh is keen on strong, traditional names. So we have so far

Ralph
Henry
Edward
Teddy

None of which particularly jump out at me, we are going round and round in circles!

So wise one's what do you think to the list, any names you could add?

Thank you

Edward nn Teddy.

colette · 07/12/2011 16:14

Henry

IndigoBell · 07/12/2011 16:15

Isn't Teddy a short form of Edward?

How about:

Charles?
Alfie?
David?
James?
Thomas?
Alexander?

Grumpla · 07/12/2011 16:17

Ralph = a penis in a Judy Blume novel.

Like the rest though Smile

EdithWeston · 07/12/2011 16:18

Edward nn Teddy is lovely. Henry is fine.

(I don't like Ralph, because it can become a vomit noise - awkward for the playground).

Some others: Edwin, Rupert, Richard, Michael, David, Peter?

Indith · 07/12/2011 16:18

Another vote for Edward with nn Teddy.

Henry is nice too.

Ralph just makes me think of the penis in Judy Blume although I suppose teenagers these days probably don't ready Judy Blume so probably not a teasing issue when he gets older.

Indith · 07/12/2011 16:18

Grin Grumpla

barbiecaughtkissingsanta · 07/12/2011 16:35

Bloody july Blume Xmas Grin

Dh is a James, so was maybe thinking that could be a middle name, especially if we go with Henry.

Hmm decisions, decisions...

Henry and Edward, royal names

also

Richard
John
William
James
Charles
Louis
etc.

I love a kingly name

hellokitty123 · 07/12/2011 17:30

I like Ralph - agree that Judy Blume isn't read that widely these days for it to be a problem imo.

Henry/Harry/Edward/Teddy are all very widely used already - they don't float my boat personally.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/12/2011 17:37

Edward with nn Teddy = lovely. Ralph = terrible. Don't like Henry but that's just me.

MummysLovesSanta · 07/12/2011 20:25

Teddy! Xmas Wink

lljkk · 07/12/2011 20:26

Tell us your top 10 choices, OP?

timetoask · 08/12/2011 20:09

Harry
George
Timothy
Robert
William

KatAndKit · 08/12/2011 20:15

Edward, from that list. You can use Teddy as a nickname while he is little. Don't like Ralph personally. Others on here have suggested some good traditional names - how about William or Richard?

justhayley · 08/12/2011 21:11

William
Harry
Thomas

proudfoot · 09/12/2011 13:23

Edward with nickname Teddy is a brilliant name - lovely, strong, classic but Teddy gives it a bit of cuteness.

Henry also fab name, can't go wrong with it.

Not keen on Ralph or Teddy as a full name. Teddy could also be Theodore I guess?

Doozie · 09/12/2011 14:10

Love all of them except Ralph, which is fine just not my favourite. I would go for Edward nn Teddy.

mathanxiety · 09/12/2011 20:52

Suggestions:
Anthony
David
Clement
Thaddeus
Theodore
Oscar
Michael
Joseph
Peter

(To ralph = 'to puke'.)

barbiecaughtkissingsanta · 10/12/2011 05:19

Meh.. Ok you have all convinced me that Ralph isn't a good name dh will be pleased!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, I'm still not in love with anything but I think Henry James or Edward James will be the two that we finally chose from.

AwayinaKayzr · 10/12/2011 05:22

I like Henry James.

I'm glad you've decided Ralph isn't good. Never heard of Judy Blume but Ralph is horrible(sorry to mums of Ralph's)

nooka · 10/12/2011 05:49

I'd imagine that their might be a lot of Edwards around with Twilight still going strong. Both Henry and Edward are perfectly nice names, but they aren't very interesting. Can't you persuade your dh to consider something strong and traditional but slightly less commonly used?

Richard, David, Peter, Nicholas, Andrew, Robert, Stuart, Douglas and many more would all be a little less usual right now without being unusual IYSWIM. Seems a pity you have to opt for something that you both really like.

nooka · 10/12/2011 05:49

don't really like!

barbiecaughtkissingsanta · 10/12/2011 05:54

Nooka I agree but dh and I have very different taste in boys names.
We are living in the UAE at the moment so I think dh is really keen on having a strong, traditional name.

Richard, William, Harry, Andrew, David and Peter are all names within our family group already.

I could live with Henry or Edward, but I worry there is a fantastic name out there they we haven't stumbled across yet.

Could you get a book of traditional English names (perhaps tricky in UAE) to look through? Perhaps one that is quite old. My parents used the Oxford English book of Christian names (although granted I did end up with a very unusual name) it does seem likely that there is a name out there that you both would love. I googled a bit, and it seems that perceptions of what is traditional vary wildly (I can't imagine your dh being keen on Blake for example).

How about a variation of Edward, like Edmund, Edwin or Edgar?
