What do you think of Beau for a boy?

I quite like it. Sorry that's not too helpful is it?! It's not a fave, but I don't dislike it.

DeeOfTheNorth · 07/12/2011 11:51

I like it. Would depend on what your surname is though - I think a short name like this suits a longer surname iyswim.

ConnorCamden · 07/12/2011 12:29

Surname begins with T, popular boys name, two sylables, ends in the UH sound

Quite nice. Agree that a two syllable surname works better than a one syllable one (whereas we have a short one syllable surname and both ds's have 2/3 syllable first names).

HappyCamel · 07/12/2011 12:42

It means beautiful, if he's ugly he'll look a total tit.

DeeOfTheNorth · 07/12/2011 12:51

Wtf...."If he's ugly he'll look like a total tit".....???? Hmm

a) not a very nice thing to say

b) my name derives from that of a roman goddess....I don't recall anyone taking the piss because I don't look particularly 'divine'

rachel234 · 07/12/2011 13:27

HappyCamel, do you really think that all Graces are graceful, all Hectors are bullies, all Claudias are lame, all Quentins are the fifth born etc. etc. Also, beautiful can refer to a person's character, for example.

PattySimcox · 07/12/2011 13:30

Lovely name but the only Beau that I know is female so I would automatically assume it was a girl's name

EdithWeston · 07/12/2011 13:40

Beau is definitely a boys name (female version is Belle), and I think it's a great name.

iloveberries · 07/12/2011 13:42

if your srname begins with T will he sound like he's called Boat?

Just a thought?

Sounds a bit like a celeb faddy name, but one of the better ones!

ShowOfHands · 07/12/2011 13:45

My favourite MNer has a v handsome Beau. I love it.

Patty, it's a masculine, French word. A female Beau is like a female Trevor.

hellokitty123 · 07/12/2011 13:49

The female version of Beau is Belle. And not all the female Belles/Bellas that I know are beautiful....still a lovely name though Smile.

hellokitty123 · 07/12/2011 13:49

Oh, sorry, missed your post Edith.

Madondogs · 07/12/2011 13:51

I love it. Had an adored and very much missed Golden Retriever called Beau , and he was very handsome!

LadyWellian · 07/12/2011 13:52

If your surname is Tyler you'll need to be aware of the 'bow tie' angle.

Other T names, I'd echo iloveberries' point about sounding like Boat.

seeker · 07/12/2011 13:53

It's not a name, it's a word. You can't call children random words.

LadyWellian · 07/12/2011 13:58

Ah, come now, Seeker, it's got form - Beau Geste, Beau Brummell - though I accept that it probably wasn't a given name in either case.

seeker · 07/12/2011 14:07

Michael (I think) and George respectively.

hellokitty123 · 07/12/2011 14:18

But lots of names are derived from or are actually words - Will, Herb, Grace, Violet etc. etc. And Beau isn't even an English word.

hellokitty123 · 07/12/2011 14:19

In fact, Will is the name I do find irritatingly close to the verb 'will', the noun 'the last will'. But Beau - wouldn't bother me at all.

seeker · 07/12/2011 14:22

I though William and Aherbert hqve always been proper names, haven't they? And flowers hqve been used as girl's names forever. Beau is just silly.it's not a name, it's the French for beautiful.

MamaLazarou · 07/12/2011 14:59

I love Beau. Agree that it depends enormously on the surname. Wasn't Melanie Wilkes' son in Gone With The Wind called Beau? Short for Beauregarde, IIRC.

PattySimcox · 07/12/2011 16:38

Edith and SoH I agree, I always thought it was a boys name, but it didn't seem appropriate to say that to the mother of DDs friend when they were introduced in reception Xmas Grin

mumof4sons · 09/12/2011 12:28

I love the name. I wanted to call one of my sons Beauregard, but my exH wouldn't have it. The name is French and means beautiful gaze.

The reason I wanted the name was that I am from the Deep South in the USA, but am living in England. I wanted my son to have some Southern roots.

MissMollyCoddle · 09/12/2011 12:44

I know two Beau's, one boy and one girl (both 1 year old) and I also know a girl called 'Bo' (3yrs) though its pronounced the same

I like Beau, do think it needs a strong surname to go with it though.
