Zinnia or maybe Dahlia..

I am a fan of flower/ nature names generally but don't to use Lily, Rose, Daisy as lots of them around here.

I really like the spunkiness of Zinnia but is it a bit too unusual?
I also like Dahlia but am a bit concerned re pronunciation difficulties/ Black Dahlia association or perhaps it isn't strong in this country..

Opinions or other similar ideas would be fantastic!

I love Zinnia (Very Darling Buds of May with her twin Petunia!) I also love Hebe and it's association with the Greek goddess of youthfulness.

LePruneDeMaTante · 06/12/2011 12:40

I like Dahlia a lot - I think it has a lot of character and the flowers are great, no connotations I don't think.

Zinnia is fine - wasn't there a Zinnia in The Darling Buds of May?

I really like Iris. I also love a flower called Astrantia, but that might be a bit too bold. You wouldn't want to be a weedy little girl with a name like Astrantia.

AnotherMincepie · 06/12/2011 12:54

Zinnia and Dahlia both great names!

Montsti · 06/12/2011 12:58

I prefer Zinnia and to be honest Dahlia would be a problem for me ref: The Black Dahlia...but I do watch the Crime & Investigation Channel and the film is fairly recent...

EdithWeston · 06/12/2011 13:09

Dahlia is a beautifully Wodehousian name. Zinnia makes me think of The Darling Buds of May. I think I have literary associations as I've never met either in RL.

LePruneDeMaTante · 06/12/2011 13:13

Camilla is also lovely - is it eg Spanish for camellia?

twopeasinapod · 06/12/2011 15:50

Is there a Black Dahlia film monsti?

prune- I think of Camilla being v English. I don't think it has anything to do with the flower but couldn't tell you the meaning without looking it up.

Camilla is a name from the Roman myths, predating the flower (named after the surname of its discoverer) by many centuries.

Well there you go. Nice name but no floweriness Smile

I really love Anemone. Lovely floral name and I've never heard anyone called it (not sure if that's good or bad though?).

EskimoPie · 06/12/2011 21:21

I know two sisters (youngest two of six; the names got more interesting with the latter children) Primrose and Celandine...

twopeasinapod · 07/12/2011 09:48

Anemone- bit too hard to pronounce, I think.
I like Celandine and Primrose but is Primrose too 'prim'? Smile

ConnorCamden · 07/12/2011 11:36

Zinnia is adorable!

telsa · 07/12/2011 13:20

Zinnia is gorgeous. What about Marigold, Peony or Tansy.

Firawla · 07/12/2011 13:23

Zinnia is really nice, i like Dahlia too. There was a baby Dahlia opposite us in postnatal ward when i had my ds1, thought it was nice and something bit different

PercyFilth · 07/12/2011 16:46

The only Primrose that springs to my mind is Mrs Harold Shipman, so no.

twopeasinapod · 07/12/2011 20:22

Zinnia is getting a lot more love than I expected it to on here!

percy- I do remember Primrose Shipman but I don't think it would be hard to shake off that association. She certainly isn't currently in the public eye.

I think Zinnia's lovely.

Primrose makes me think of the mouse in Brambley Hedge Smile

I know two or three Marigolds oddly enough, I thought it was quite unusual the first time I heard it, but I'm probably desensitised now!

Bert2e · 07/12/2011 22:08

Ooooh I'd forgotten Tansy!

twopeasinapod · 08/12/2011 11:59

Ooh, I do like Tansy- thx tesla and Bertie. Not sure if it sounds like a mick name though..

twopeasinapod · 08/12/2011 12:00

Thank you so much for all the responses. I'm surprised that Zinnia has received a thumbs up so far.
