What about Idris?

or Aurelian or something else?

Have rather unexpectedly found myself probably (cord was a bit in the way) expecting another boy... I was absolutely convinced it was a girl so didn't have a boys name at the ready.

We already have a Corin and a Lucian

And most of the boys names I like sound like the names of my other boys

I have to say we are not Welsh and are not choosing it on that basis

I know an Idris, he's usually called Iddy. Lovely.

lljkk · 30/11/2011 19:28

I worked with some software called Idrisi (Ih-driss-ee). But that isn't remotely close to right; it's something to do with where the D goes, maybe, or maybe it's the middle ih... (all muddled up again).

I'd probably get your other boys' names wrong, too. My cousin is a girl called Corrinne (Kuh-rin) & I bet her pronounciation is nothing like your Corin (or is it?). I worked for a Lucian (Loo-see-ahn), so I guess you're used to correcting people anyway.

DownyEmerald · 30/11/2011 19:35

I think Idris is fab - also a fan of Cadair Idris. I think Aurelian sounds too much like the others.

brandysoakedbitch · 30/11/2011 19:36

No most people get Corin straight away - it is phonetic - some people pronounce Lucian as Loo-shan (and he is a loo-see-an) but on the whole they get it right. My daughters names are unusual too but completely phonetic so I do wonder sometimes how people can get it wrong.

Yes Downy you are right about Aurelian (much as I like it) too matchy matchy- Good job I didn't give the dog a Latin name eh?

Yes, the X Factor one is a bit of an annoyance. He came along when our little Rhidian was about nine months old and we are still having to say 'No he's not named after the X Factor singer'. (We did once accidentally stop for a meal at the X Factor one's local pub and got a rapturous welcome when DS was asked his name :D)

If it doesn't have to be Welsh, what about Elias?

CrotchFlakes · 30/11/2011 19:57

Idris and Ivor are my future twin boy cat names. Dave and Doris if the kittens are boy and girl. Doris and Edith if two girls. Anyway I like it, but I would have to look into the pram and ask you if he knew Land of My Fathers Smile

brandysoakedbitch · 30/11/2011 20:29

Hmmm yes - I have Irish girls names and Latin boys names and in my defence Idris is Arabic too - mind you we aren't Arabs either

Idris is lovely. Apart from Idris elba there is also one in Ivor the engine. He is a "neat heraldic welsh dragon" . have met one 8 year old with the name.

coolragdoll · 30/11/2011 20:58

Idris is a great name- also the last king of libya

MidLine · 01/12/2011 16:07

I think Idris is a great name, although I do seem to remember that years ago there was a drinks company with this name that made cream soda and dandelion and burdock and the like?!

4madboys · 01/12/2011 16:13

Idris is lovely, i know a little Idris, well he is about 7? now, lovely little boy :)

pranma · 01/12/2011 18:14

cader Idris= Arthur's seat

BikeRunSki · 02/12/2011 12:40

Surely

Cadair Idris - Idris' Seat, and in mid(ish) Wales
Arthur's Seat - In Edinburgh

?

BarryShitpeas · 02/12/2011 12:46

Idriss is quite common around here (popular, not THAT common).

Everyone seems to find it easy to pronounce, with the "I" softened and the emphasis on "Driss".

Mind you, we are in London.

brandysoakedbitch · 02/12/2011 12:46

Err I don't know and guess I have to find this out (as I bet someone will ask me at some point)

The thing is BikeRunSki, do you like it? Is it the name of some terribly interesting, well read and good looking young man who loves his Mother? Grin

brandysoakedbitch · 02/12/2011 12:48

Oh dear quite common is not good (panics) - I wonder where it came on the naming baby league tables? Does anyone have a link?

Do we think Idris Elba is responsible?

Idris is a great name!

(He's the red hot, heraldic Welsh dragon in Ivor the Engine if anyone remembers that).

DS has a mate called Idris Mohammad They joke his dad wanted him to play rugby for Wales (yes they also know its an Islamic name!).

brandysoakedbitch · 02/12/2011 13:34

Oh well Dh and I absolutely love it and I do think it goes well with our other boys names - and as children of the 70's the dragon does immediately spring to mind - but that dragon did have a beautiful voice, he sang in their choir if I remember rightly

Brandy I LOVE it , I said so earlier up thread. It is the name of a kind, well rounded, intelligent, good looking boy who loves his mum and animals and will grow up to be a great lover and achieve world peace. And be a brilliant cook, and also be rich and generous. Smile

brandysoakedbitch · 02/12/2011 17:47

BikeRunSki - I think you are right, what a coincidence, that is exactly how all my other sons are going to end up too. Marvellous. My sons (and daughters) are going to be competing to bring about world peace.....

BikeRunSki · 02/12/2011 22:08

Brandy, amazingly it is what my DS's name means too.

nooka · 03/12/2011 04:40

Makes me immediately think 'shisticuf shisticuf' Grin Ivor the engine is one of my all time favourites! So yes, fab name.

SoupDragon · 03/12/2011 08:38

I named my iPad Idris in lieu of another male SmallDragon.
