Hi everyone... This is only my 2nd post scary haha
I'm due my 2nd baby (DD is 5 from a previous relationship) in May
All very exciting except for the name my DH has fallen in love with (even before we started trying to get pregnant)
If its a boy he wants to call him Leland (as in the son of Dog the Bounty hunter)
I thought he would get over this phase but hea dead set on it.. Personally I hate the name, I think it's a little chavvy, it has grown on me slightly but that's about it !
I've been mentioning other names as and when but he's stuck with this (although we dot know the sex yet)
Am I being unreasonable to hate this name so much or do I need to let him get his way and hope it will grow on me ????

No don't let him have his way. You'll regret it big time! We're currently styling the same sort of thing. Each of us hates the other's favourite name and we know realistically that we hav to let those names go and find another. It's got to be a name you both like.

You need to find a name you both love. Be honest with him and work together to find one you both love.

[Shock] No way can you let that happen. Can you recruit some family members (preferably his) to laugh the whole idea off?

Haha I will be trying the family member thing this weekend.. Wink the fact i hate the name isn't my only problem.. I have a friend who's kid has the same name, makes me feel like I should ask her permission to pinch it... Fingers crossed his parents hate it as much as mine did

i know most people these days think that you should choose the name together, my dh - godf bless his cotton socks thinks he had a say too.

i mean if he actively hated a name - it would go off the list - but this is the key part i think men really only ever have the final say if they can push a water melon out of their arse

I don't like that name.
It sounds like a Lorry

You need to tell him you hate it, and that you should work on finding a name you both like.

Hi Newtothisstuff,

Don't think you're being unreasonable - it is a bit of an odd one.

Also think your child's name needs to be something you both like, it shouldn't be one parents choice. You're the one who has to go through pregnancy and childbirth so definitely think he needs to compromise more!

Good luck!

It should be joint. There are so many names I like but DH refuses point blank. But it can't really be any other way. Loads of names, get him to draw up a list, if he insists on Leland, buy him a dog.

get a pet and call this Leland,
dog, hamster, goldfish.... something for your 5yr old for CHrsitmas maybe?

then the name will already be used and he will have to think about a different one.

Leland was the name of the murderer in Twin Peaks, if that helps :o

Can you compromise with it as a second name.

I'll give anything a try Grin

Names should really be a joint choice you will after all have to hear/use it or a long time! I would offer a compromise and use it as a middle name while finding a first mane you both love

if you really hate the name, I think you had better fight it.

Report
Sloobreeus · 30/11/2011 18:34

Say no to Leland if you hate it. Draw up a short list each of, say, six names. Don't look at each other's lists until they are complete. If there is no common name, go through the baby book and try again until there is a name that is on both lists. We did this for DD1, who is named Eleanor.

The pet idea is a good one.

Sounds like a lorry to me.

I agree with others who've said it would ideally be a joint decision to choose a name. However, you're doing all the work pg and birth-wise, so IMO you get the final decision. That said, I don't think either parent should be able to impose a name that the other parent really hates - there must be some middle ground, or an alternative he can be convinced of. Alternatively, just hope it's a girl Wink. Good luck!
