This is not terribly urgent, as I am only ttc, and after a few miscarriages over the last 18 months we have been mulling over names to keep our spirits up Smile

This is baby 5 (or will be) so likely to be the last, unless I get my way and get a 6 too (unlikely!), and I have so many names i want to use,

We both like Mary and Jane as possibilities (along with many others including Priscilla, Thisbe, Gloria, Susan, Angela, Thora)

I know hyphenated names are frowned upon on mn, and actually I am not a big fan, but is Mary-Jane more acceptable?
I love both names, but can't make up my mind whether hyphenating them is rubbish, and I prefer just Mary or Jane as a name on it's own.

it makes me think of shoes.
but aside from that I have nothing against it, and that wouldn't necessarily stop me using a name if I really loved it.

not overly keen on hyphenated names but it isn't my baby.

i say, if you love the name then use it. doesn't matter what anyone else thinks

Montsti · 29/11/2011 09:36

It sounds a bit "Waltons" (Mary-Beth/Johnboy/Jimbob etc..) to me...am also not a big fan of hyphenated names but your choice..you could just use Mary as first name and Jane as mn giving you the option of using both names together or just Mary...

Hope you get your BFP soon - good luck!

JaneRustle · 29/11/2011 09:39

Why are hyphenated names frowned on? They are very normal in France, for example. If you have a problem with hyphens you don't have to have one - you can be Mary Jane instead of Mary-Jane. I know an Ann-Marie and an Anne Marie, a John-Paul and a John Paul - both known as JP.

I like Mary-Jane.

PandaNot · 29/11/2011 09:42

I like Mary Jane. DC1 would have been Mary Jane, had he been a girl. DD (who isn't Mary Jane, we'd changed our mind by then) uses both names but hers aren't hypenated, she just likes to use both.

tummytickler · 29/11/2011 09:43

Hyphenated names always get a beating on here.
I don't like hyphenated names though, but I love both names. I am possibly being greedy, trying to have two names in one! I actually think the hyphenation takes away from the simplicity of the names so maybe I will decide against it. Their simplicity is why I love Mary and Jane, and to hyphenate suddenly becomes a bit fussy.
I will just have to choose between Mary and Jane (or any of the others)

Go with Mary Jane, unhyphenated, then she has the option to use either or both.

midnightexpress · 29/11/2011 12:50

Erm, you do know that it's a slang word for marijuana, I presume?

Also makes me think of shoes.

Hatwoman · 29/11/2011 12:56

dd has a very similar hyphenated name - and I love it. It's unusual without being odd/try-too-hard iyswim. However, I have to say, that Mary-Jane is a type of shoe to me

marge2 · 29/11/2011 12:57

Speaking as a hyphenated myself. Beware the hyphen!! That's all anyione remembers!! Nobody ever gets my name right. I get Sarah-Jane, Anne-Marie, Marie-Claire etc etc, etc. People are always really embarrased that they can't remember which one it is.

I have given up and just answer to anything hyphenated now!

Drugs.

And, a long way after drugs, shoes.

And a long way after that, an Enid Blyton jolly hockey sticks girl.

MamaLazarou · 29/11/2011 15:10

I really love Mary-Jane. I'm aware of the drug reference

I know one. She has always been referred to that in full as opposed to Mary OR Jane. It was used as a family name (after her mother and grandmother) Her mum wasn't aware of the drugs reference but it have never been an issue and there are a lot of pretty songs about her GrinWink

Shortened to M-J ONLY once she attended Uni away from home and when people phoned her house and asked for M-J her mother used to hang up on them saying 'nobody here by that name'

She has chosen not to give any of her 3 DD's a hyphenated name but that was more a personal choice than because of any horrible childhood experiences.

Do please be aware that Mary means bitter and Jane means Gift from God so on occassion she has referred to herself as a 'bitter gift from God' Grin

MrsPlugThePlumber · 29/11/2011 18:31

It reminds me of Spiderman!

BibiBelle · 29/11/2011 18:37

That's also true MrsPlug which is why she didn't use Lois for one of her DDs Grin

StrictlySazz · 29/11/2011 18:38

I think it is lovely and makes a change from the scores of Evie's/Isla's and Hannah's we have here Smile

BTW I see in my crystal ball that moving on from Mary-Jane, the next fashionable drug will be called Betty. Just sayin Wink

ScabbyHorse · 29/11/2011 18:44

I think its cute

argylesocks · 29/11/2011 19:18

Love it! It's cool and classic and much more interesting than plain Mary or Jane. I think it's cute and retro.

FirstNoelle · 29/11/2011 20:53

Drugs and shoes do hover in the back of my mind, but mainly I think of the wonderful Mary J Blige, so it can't be bad.

Takver · 29/11/2011 21:24

Sadly says cannabis to me too - but maybe only the case for older people, and I guess more a US thing as well.

Its a pretty name, though.

Meglet · 29/11/2011 21:25

No.

Makes me think of pot. And shoes.

MarthasHarbour · 29/11/2011 21:29

Drugs here too

Although i do love the name, its my middle name and my sisters middle name so would be cute..

Letchlady · 29/11/2011 21:33

Noooo, not Mary-Jane!

Mary Jane is the name for one's lady bits. To me, that would be like naming your child fanjo!

I actually know a child called Mary-Jane, and I just can't bring myself to call her by her full name... so I often just call her Mary, but the mother corrects me every time, so I do and every time I do I inwardly cringe.

TCOB · 29/11/2011 21:35

Love the name Mary, love the name Jane. We talked about this for DD but sadly it means weed to many, many people. The joke will wear thin for poor little MJ at some point.
