For a boy. Is this turning too girly? I am starting to really, really like it. Simple, short, strong, and I think it grows well. Opinions would be welcome Smile

Quinn is definately better as a boys' name. It sounds harsh and masculine like Finn. I think it makes a nice alternative to the overused Finn imo.

EsmeWeatherwax · 30/11/2011 10:29

Wee boy in my street is called Quinn, it's a lovely name, would never use it for a girl tbh, definitely a boy's name.

evamummy · 30/11/2011 10:46

Quinn is a lovely boys' name, I also like Quentin, which I'd probably use on the bc.

lisianthus · 30/11/2011 19:00

Quinn on Glee was apparently the surname. I like it for a boy- it was on my shortlist!

The Mighty Quinn. Great song.

Toobluntforboss · 30/11/2011 19:02

I love Quinn for a boy and wanted to use it for DC3, but DH wasn't keen on it unfortunately. I do love it thoughGrin

Fishpond · 30/11/2011 19:52

Lottie, highly doubt quim will be a problem here in the US. To my understanding it's a British thing. Smile

I've never heard of Quim (and I'm in the UK) Hmm..

FreckledLeopard · 30/11/2011 22:38

The Mighty Quinn! Great song and I love the name. Definitely a boy's name IMO.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 01/12/2011 04:06

I think of it as a boy's name - but - the only Quinn I actually knew (boy) loved to dress up in his sister's clothes so it doesn't exactly have masculine connotations for me. Grin I am just one random person off t'internet, though.

LAbaby · 01/12/2011 04:26

I know a girl Quinn and didn't realize it was a boys name. She's a lovely child an as a result I love the name.

Greenwing · 02/12/2011 17:43

NO! 'quim' was my first thought.

Enough people here will know quim for it to be a very embarrassing name if he does come to the UK - a complete no-non as far as I'm concerned. How toe-curlingly embarrassing for a boy to find his name is like a slang word for girl's parts.
Perhaps you can get away with it if he stays on your side of the pond!

WetAugust · 02/12/2011 18:28

I agree with Greenwing . It would be a disaster.

Try writing the name 'Quinn'. You'll see the 2 n's could easily be misread as a 'm' = Quim.

Sounds a nice name. Reads as female genitalia - Not good.

lottiegb · 02/12/2011 19:44

A cousin in Canada called her girl Quinn. Our uncle, Canadian but based in London, was quite shocked, as quim was the overwhelming association. Perhaps an age or reading-related one as the term appears in literature but isn't commonly used in speech. It's not 'nice' word for vulva either, more like c*. I'd accept that lots of people don't know that though.

Reminds me of a women's clothes shop locally, called 'Gash' (similarly, I imagine you are either astounded by that, or you aren't...)

ConfusedPreggo · 03/12/2011 19:31

Thanks for all the input. The quim association, as I've said, bothers me not at all. It's more I was worried that it is soaring on the girls popularity chart. I still really like it and it's definitely a contender.

ThePoorMansBeckySharp · 03/12/2011 19:36

The 'quim' thing should bother you. Please don't use Quinn. Seriously.

hulabula · 03/12/2011 22:04

I'm in the UK and have never heard of quim - honestly! Do people really use the word - and does the younger generation? I have never heard or read the word (but then I don't read a lot of literature Smile).

I know a little Quinn (he's about 8 now) and as far as I can tell, likes his name and has never been teased about it.

AberdeenAngusina · 04/12/2011 06:34

I don't use the word "quim" but then I don't use the word c**t either. But I certainly know it. I met a toddler Quinn, and my first thought was "Poor Kid! Embarrassing name!"

(from Eskimo Nell) :
Twas fair to state
It was not that great
Though it's strength lay deep within
And a better word,
Though seldom heard
Would not be c**t but quim....

So one of the classic filthy poems uses it, but says it's not commonly used, if that helps.

ThatllDoPig · 05/12/2011 13:02

Its in some films. Heard it in Rob Roy.

mopsyflopsy · 05/12/2011 13:08

Well our Quinn has not had anyone mention 'quim' and I also think it has a very different sound to it (I hope that most would pronounce them differently Smile). That is if people even know what quim is - I didn't Blush.

mopsyflopsy · 05/12/2011 13:10

I'm actually surprised so much fuss is made about a very rarely used word, quim - what about much more common words like Willy (William) for example, which imo is much more 'obviously' teasable....

MamaLazarou · 05/12/2011 13:33

Quim.

MamaLazarou · 05/12/2011 13:36

Of course I would never say 'Quim' to the parent of a child called Quinn. Nor would I call the child 'Quim'. But I would never be able to hear it or see it written down without thinking 'Quim'.

Quim.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 05/12/2011 13:43

I would also think 'Quim'.

MamaLazarou · 05/12/2011 13:46

"It's not 'nice' word for vulva "

It's not a word for vulva at all - it means fanny hair.

ThatllDoPig · 05/12/2011 18:23

I thought it came from a welsh thing.. A big gash in the side of a mountain, geographical feature is called a quim, and that has somewhere in history been associated with the female parts. ! Or thats what I read somewhere near Snowden.
