Thought we'd found perfect boy's name - now not so sure...

DH and I thought we had the perfect boy's name for us in Edward. Both love it, it works well with our surname, and we can live with the probable nn and shortenings. Sadly, just told a friend and her response was "Oh, like Twilight?"

Having not really done the Twilight thing, I hadn't even thought of that! Do you think the name's been totally usurped by glittery-skinned vampires or can we still get away with it?

Goodness me, I wouldn't worry about that. Edward is a lovely name, just go ahead with it.

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 25/11/2011 13:30

Don't give it another thought, it is a lovely classic name, which far predates, and will far outlive, twilight.

funnypeculiar · 25/11/2011 13:33

Ignore, ignore.

It is a rule of life that anyone you tell your planned baby's name to is bound to have known a bully at school by that name, or highlight some utterly unsuitable media darling by that name, or suggest some rhyming slang by which your baby's name is essentially Twat, or similat.

MelinaM · 25/11/2011 13:33

Edward is a beautiful name, bugger Twilight!

funnypeculiar · 25/11/2011 13:33

similar, even.

flopsy1974 · 25/11/2011 13:35

I love the name Edward and would be a strong contender for any future DS. It is a strong, traditional, timeless name and for that reason youu can't go far wrong. According to mumsnet it is quite popular but not overly. I personally don't know any little Edwards (in yorkshire). I don't think twighlight will have a big effect on popularity either.

edoli · 25/11/2011 13:41

My DS1 is Edward, now8, and he's never even heard of Twilight. Just go for it. He can be Ed, Eddie,Ted, Ned, Woody- whatever suits. I don't regret it at all.

muppetthecow · 25/11/2011 13:48

Thanks guys! I just had this sudden panic (which may have something to do with my hormones at nine days overdue) that we were going to have to totally re-think the situation :)

Of course it could be a moot point - Baby could be a girl Wink

Edward is a lovely, classic name. I don't think many people will.associate it with Twilight, certainly I wouldn't.

COME ON BABY

ColourMeWithChaos · 25/11/2011 15:48

Me and DH have just decided that my bump will be a Edward and we have had a couple of Twilight comments (mainly from my elder DSs girlfriends!) but really it is such a classic name that lots of people won't associate it with that.

I mean Harry Potter was arguably a bigger phenomenon and we don't associate all Harry's with those books and films.

It really is a lovely name!

FourThousandHoles · 25/11/2011 15:52

Ignore it, by the time your Edward is 5, Twilight will have been forgotten

I know a 3yo Edward who is fab, and tbh Twilight never crossed my mind despite having read the books

Go for it :)

Thanks Should Baby be a boy, he will still be an Edward :)

Thanks for the reassurance! Somehow this far past due-date everything seems like a huge drama. I just needed some good old MNers-knocking-the-sense-back-into-you Grin

I really don't think it matters as Edward is a classic name. If it was an unusual name that was associated with a film etc.. the maybe a consideration, but not a name like Edward...

Montsti · 25/11/2011 16:36

BTW - I love the name Edward and parti. Teddy!

StrictlySazz · 25/11/2011 16:37

Edwina for a girl? Grin

BeattieBow · 25/11/2011 16:40

I have an Edward, and have never had that comment. its a lovely name.

In fact I have an Isabella too! (predates Twilight btw).

pinkgirlythoughts · 25/11/2011 16:44

I think the problem is that Edward, although not 'unusual' as such, is uncommon enough that lots of people will have never heard it used before twilight (though they'd know the name, they've never heard it actually used, IYSWIM?), so that's now their first thought when they hear it.

FourThousandHoles · 25/11/2011 16:53

I went 9 days over OP, I feel your pain

Good luck, hope all goes well

I have an Edward (only one round our way in yorks), and no one has ever mentioned twilight to me. In fact [crawls out of cave] its only very recently that I heard of said twilight....

Don't worry about it - a lovely classic name, even with my obvious bias!

rosebery · 25/11/2011 17:04

Just seen previous post above mine ... Point proven, I think!

pinkgirlythoughts · 25/11/2011 17:37

Haha, perhaps it's just where I'm from then, I'd never heard of an Edward until I moved to Leeds, and when I suggested it as a possible name for a future son of mine as a teenager, I got a lot of raised eyebrows, even some outright laughter, and "you can't call a baby that!" type comments.
