Reasons to NOT give potential DS such a popular name!

I am hoping you lot can help me...

My DH LOVES the name Alfie, and admittedly I do like it but I really don't want to call our DC (due in May - don't want to find out the gender in advance) the fourth most popular boys name of the moment. I have said that I would not want our potential Alfie to be one of many in his class and later on, probably, workplace but DH doesn't think this is an issue.

I was wondering if you could help me to come up with some more, and possibly better, reasons to come up with another potential name for a boy... (baby brain has set in so my powers of argument are a bit limp). Unfortunately I am also currently struggling to find another name too, which obviously isn't helping so any ideas / inspiration there would be good too!
Thank you ladies!

You don't have to argue against a name...if you don't like it then it's out. That's the only fair way and it goes both ways. My DD1 was nameless for 2 weeks as we were trying to find one we both liked equally.

You're blinking carrying and birthing him so you dont have to settle. Tell DH that....don't look for some magic negative as it wont' really wash. Smile I personally like Edward, Sonny and Anthony.

babysaurus · 21/11/2011 21:15

Oooh, I'm quite liking Sonny now you mention it!

I guess it's tricky with the name Alfie as I do like it but I don't want my child to have the same name as lots of others. However, I have just seen a thread called 'Alfie - too faddy' which I may just send to DH! Alfie also seems to be very popular with dogs too, a point I keep pointing out to DH! I have a while to talk him round (it was his Grandad's name which is why he is so keen) so hopefully I've got enough time!

Archie?

EdithWeston · 21/11/2011 21:19

Maybe you could persuade him that it should be in the middle?

I know only one Alfie in RL. If you both like it, why not use it anyhow? Some names are frequently used because they're lovely.

babysaurus · 21/11/2011 21:22

I am thinking the same, and thought it would be a good compromise. I think Alfie is FAR too popular and, as has been pointed out in the other Alfie thread (from which I am nicking ideas) it will date and is quite faddy. I think it works well with a middle name so now I have to come up with some names which will work well as a first name with it!
Sometimes I wonder if finding out the gender might be a good idea after all... Confused

Kayano I have two friends who have Archies and it's the name my sister wants for her (as yet unconcieved, admittedly) DS so am not keen on that. Thanks though!

I find boys names really hard!

I now 3 Alfies and they're all little buggers. Tell that to DH!

JjingleBeanplusPudalltheway · 21/11/2011 21:24

My ds is a Jack, soo common, but I've never come across another at toddlers/monkey music/tumble tots/pre school, nursery and now school.

However his nickname is sonny, as he's a smiley blonde boy. He is a total jack but I'm sometimes think sonny would have been just as good.

ShowOfHands · 21/11/2011 21:27

I know 3 Alfies too. All extremely naughty.

babysaurus · 21/11/2011 21:30

maybe I need to borrow these naughty Alfie's so he starts to associate the name with them!

I thought Jack was very popular too, but have only met two (three if you include my mums dog)

My cousins new baby is Freddie so that's out. Also, I think calling him something like Alfie but not actually Alfie will kind of defeat the object.

Choose a name you AND your DH love.

Names are so personal - I don't like Alfie/Archie type names at all, I'm afraid, but that shouldn't really put you off, as you may not like my choices either Smile.

babysaurus · 23/11/2011 09:19
