Both me and DH love this name but is it horrendously popular? Origionally we were looking at Irish names (and have chosen an Irish name for if this one is a DS) but we liked this name so much it has made its way onto the shortlist :o
However will she spend the rest of her life being 'Lucy Surname' or 'Lucy Initial'? We really are torn! Also which spelling is better - Lucy or Lucie?

I have one :)

She isn't known as Lucy as there is another Lucy in her year so she is Lucy . There is also a Lucy . Year group of 90. This doesn't bother her though, in fact she thinks it's funny.

I also know of two or three of a similar age (mine is 7) but haven't heard of it being used more recently, probably due to it's popularity.

When she was born we used the name because we both loved it and there weren't any other names we agreed on, and although we had no idea of its popularity at the time, I don't think it would have made a difference if we had. I think it's a beautiful, classic name that won't date, which is probably why it's so popular. I know plenty of older Lucys so it isn't of this decade imo like some other currently popular names are.

I've always been of the opinion that if you love a name, you should use it, after all you never know if she would be the only Lucy in her peer group, the one that also contains three Chardonnay-Kylies as named by parents trying to be different in the same way.

I'm a Lucy and I love my name if that helps. I'm 32 so back in the day it wasn't popular and my parents chose well for me I think. I have 2 kids and don't know any little Lucy's. Go for it. Good luck

PickFlowersNotFights · 21/11/2011 20:39

I have a Lucie - none others (of either spelling) of her age i know (KS1) although i have a friend with a 1 yr old Lucy.

I still love it Smile

pipoca · 21/11/2011 20:52

I am a Lucy. I'm 36 and there were 2 others in my year group. I only know one child called Lucy, she's a baby. I think it's a very strong classic name.

LivingDead · 21/11/2011 20:57

I have a niece called Lucy(11), there were absolutely loads at sixth form though (I'm 30), every other girl seemed to be called Lucy or Anna.

I don't think it's decreased that much in popularity either, I can think of about 6, just from dc's schools/out and about.

acsec · 21/11/2011 20:59

I can't think of any Lucy's in the whole 2 form entry primary school I work in! Except for one of the staff. The other Lucy I know is in her 20s.

whoopeecushion · 21/11/2011 21:03

None in either of my DC's year groups at school.

We have a Lucy - she's 4 and at preschool. One more Lucy joined her preschool in April this year - so DD is still Lucy, the newer one is 'Lucy Initial'. It's the first time we've come across another Lucy though.

We really struggled with girls' names, as we know so many people with girls and took a while to agree on one, but am very very pleased we did - I think it's a very classic name, not one that will date but not so trendy that there are loads around. DD is actually Lucinda, but we've always called her Lucy as Lucinda seemed a bit grown up for a little one - she can choose what she wants as she gets old.

Although she'll probably decide to call herself Cindy after all that!

BramblyHedge · 21/11/2011 22:22

I have a 9m old Lucy. Popularity doesnt bother me. i also have a Jack!

TheMadHatter74 · 21/11/2011 22:27

StrictlySazz · 21/11/2011 22:39

The only 'doubles' in DD1's class are Isla & Sam and for DD2 is Hannah

superdragonmama · 21/11/2011 22:42

18 yr old DD has 4 Lucy's among her friends.

Lovely classic pretty name.

lurkinginthebackground · 22/11/2011 00:21

I think it is a classic name. I know off a few older Lucys, teenagers and older.
I don't think it would be a problem tbh.

PlasticFlamingo · 22/11/2011 06:02

I have a Lucy she is 5 and weirdly I have a Ren which is on another thread in names today.

violathing · 22/11/2011 06:29

My Best Frriend's DD is Lucy and so is my Mum's Jack Russell!

AberdeenAngusina · 22/11/2011 08:56

I have a 15 year old Lucy. She's always been the only Lucy in her class / year. One of our near neighbours has a 9 year old Lucy, so she's not the only Lucy in the street. We've known quite a few, though they're all different ages; there's never been any confusion. Most have the Lucy spelling, we know one Lucie and one Lucia as well.

Just after our Lucy was born, the Blue Peter puppy was named Lucy, and it does seem to be a popular dogs name.

Our daughter has always liked her name.

Surf25 · 22/11/2011 12:30

I know one 4 yr old, two almost 3 yr olds and one 18 mo old..(3 Lucy's and 1 Lucie)
I like it. I am totally with the person who said go with the name you love - you could pick what you think is the most unique original name and still find Nother in a child's class! Just go for it - lovely name!

Psammead · 22/11/2011 14:47

I have a Lucia who we call Lucy.

I know a few Lucys under 5.
