Hero was on my list. I also love Elektra. Have you come across Phye? A beautiful mortal girl mistaken for Athena (another great name as long as you don't have poster shop associations!).

We nearly named our DD Juno.

Love Hector for a boy and Leander is good too.

OliviaMumsnet · 17/11/2011 20:25

Love Hector but already have a Henry
Knew a girl at University called Nike. She had no problems getting personalised clothed and shoes Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/11/2011 20:33

I knew a Nike at school - it was pronounced Nicky and at the personalised clothing.

My daughter has an Athene as a mate, and I really like Persephone!

Louplet · 17/11/2011 20:34

Have you considered Hebe or Alethea? Were both on my list for DD but didn't go with our surname.

CheekyChoppers · 17/11/2011 21:07

I love your list OP, great taste! My name is from Greek mythology and Its always complimented on (to my face anyway!)... It's Cressida. Although I do get called alsorts, Christine, Cassandra, Crystal (!)

monkeycat · 18/11/2011 20:23

I like most of your list . Not so keen on Electra , it always seems a bit harsh to me .

We had a lot of names from greek mythology on our baby name lists but I agree with some other posters about the unfortunate endings so many of these people had !

I particularly like Hero - it was on our list but is a bit too unusual for where we live :(

We very nearly called DD2 Io but again it is a bit too 'different' for around here , but I do really love it , and poor Io ended up as a cow so not a great story ! Wink

How about Callisto , Calliope or Cassiopea ?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/11/2011 20:47

Persephone - pretty but too try hard imhoHera
Hero - not fond
Pheobe - not fond
Rhea - not fond
Iris - ok
Ariadne - love it

Also love Cassandra and Helen.

Don't like any of the boys' names but love Hector.

telsa · 24/11/2011 10:33

Persephone (pr. Per-seph-onee) Love this name!
Hera prefer Hero.
Hero See above.
Pheobe Phoebe better.
Rhea Dia.....
Iris No, dull.
Ariadne Great - spidery!
Electra Love this - but there is a complex associated!
Hermione nah.

Artemis stylish
Demeter Very nice.
Cadmus Perhaps.
Phineas Cute but a bit silly.
Leander Beautiful - esp with Hero.

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 24/11/2011 10:38

Thea

RnB · 24/11/2011 11:49

I have an Artemis. Was a tough decision between Artemis, Hera and Juno.

LOVE Apollo for a boy, or Hercules Smile Unfortunately dp has said no to those for a future ds. We would probably go for Atticus or Roman if we had a boy. And one of the girls names above for a girl

alexpolismum · 24/11/2011 15:35

My dd is called Ariadne, and I just love it!

If I had another dd I would like to call her Alcmene, but dh hates it Sad.

I also like Artemis and Hera (I would say Heera, and it's Eeera in Greek as well)

Not so keen on Cadmus, but Leander is great.

Lonnie · 24/11/2011 15:51

Ha - just looked a Norse mythology, and a lot of names sound like storage solutions from Ikea...

Thats because many of the storage solutions from ikea are named from Norse Mythology Grin

I love Phoebe, Persephone and Hero also like Ariadne

What about the 9 muses??
Calliope= Beautiful voice
Clio= Proclaimer
Erato= Passionate or Lovely
Euterpe= Rejoicing Well or Pleasure Giver
Polyhymnia =Many Songs
Melpomene =Songstress
Terpsichore =Rejoicing in the Dance or Whirling
Thalia= Festive or Flourishing
Urania =Mountain Queen

Personally I have a Phoebe and even now 14 years on I adore the name. I dont mind to badly that it became so popular it is still a beautiful name.
I wanted Aida or Lakme' but dh said no way. (sulks)

BBear · 26/11/2011 21:50

I always have to spell my first name Candice - and now have to spell my married surname. It takes soooo long - every time I speak to anyone on the phone/dealing with any official/form/anyone. And people spell it wrong (fine) but them mispronounce it as well and I end up being "Candeeeeece" which reminds me of a "page three stunner." I do like having a slightly unusual name but after nearly 40 years it does begin to grate having to constantly spell it. Pick something that is unusual but not too weird. We have a persephone at sunday school and while it sounds lovely.... everyone has to ask how it is spelled...and that becomes the focal point of your interaction with her - which can be a good talking point or (as you get older) just tedious.

pixiestix · 27/11/2011 11:17

I love Hestia and Io.

complexnumber · 27/11/2011 18:15

DD reads a series of books about a Persephone who is nicknamed Perse (Percy). Same thinking as Percy Jackson being similar to Perseus I suppose. Is that an abbreviation you would be happy with?

I like Artemis but the Artemis Fowl connection makes it a boys name for many.

freerangeeggs · 27/11/2011 20:25

I love love love Hero. What a fantastic, beautiful name. I love that it's a bit gender ambiguous and of course the meaning of the word is great.

Persephone is beautiful too. It has loads of nickname options. I think in Malory Blackman's books the Persephone is nicknamed Sephy, which is quite nice.

Hera is lovely but obv I prefer Hero :)

Error · 28/11/2011 01:06

I should keep quiet but I can't, sorry!! Perse is a rude word in Finnish and while it is unlikely that your dc will come to contact with many finnish speaking people... Arsephone just doesn't sound very pretty, does it?

ReadingTeaLeaves · 28/11/2011 22:44

You have Artemis on your boys list - it's a girls name (another name for Diana). I love it. What about Antigone?

PercyFilth · 29/11/2011 00:21

I would stea clea of Rhea. She's a goner ... Wink
