Silas or Sawyer

Opinions? Quite like both of these, appreciate they are different 'styles' but still have the literary tie-in which I quite like.

They have both been shooting up the US (where I live) popularity list the last few years, which has me a bit Hmm and Sad but I do quite like both of them, and they're growing on me the more I think about it.

Do you know any? If you hate one or both, then WHY do you hate them?

I like Silas. It was a Biblical name before it was a literary name :)

Not so keen on Sawyer, it's too surnamey and reminds me of saws and soya.

NoHunIntended · 14/11/2011 16:22

Is your literary nod to Silas as in Marner, not the murderous Da Vinci Code monk? :) Meaning: of the forest. I like meanings for names, this doesnt do a great deal for me, but it's not bad.

Sawyer, instantly brings up the Lost actor for me. Meaning: one who saws wood. Not a fab meanig, but not bad.

comedaygoday · 14/11/2011 16:43

I like Silas and dislike Sawyer.

Silas for me is an interesting biblical name as well.as the literary reference. It is strong, unusual and classy.

Sawyer seems modern and.faddy. I also think it is a bit unisex which I do.not like.

Fishpond · 14/11/2011 17:41

I agree with the Silas connotations, yes as in Marner not Da Vinci code Grin

I do like the "of the forest" meaning a lot. I've always been very drawn to woods and forests.

I admit I got the name Sawyer from lost but it's pleasing in the accent here (southern US) rather than the "soya" pronunciation.

Thanks so far for feedback, keep it coming!

I think they're both fine names that, in the UK at least, aren't overused (as many others are these days). Perhaps one of them goes better with your surname?

Kayano · 14/11/2011 18:40

SILAS!

(marner) GrinWink

MuddlingThroughItAll · 14/11/2011 19:03

Silas is fab, is one of my DS's middle names.

Fishpond · 14/11/2011 19:10

They both seem to go fine with surname - middle name will be Isaiah.

Silas Isaiah
Sawyer Isaiah

Agree Silas is great.

JennyPiccolo · 14/11/2011 21:31

i can picture Silas as an awesome wee boy. Sawyer is a bit up himself.

pranma · 14/11/2011 21:36

I like Silas but am not at all keen on surnames as first names and dont think sawyer works well in that context.

hester · 14/11/2011 21:42

Silas!

Fishpond · 15/11/2011 03:29

So no one at all likes Sawyer? Interesting Smile

I think both names are great for a boy personally, I have both on my list.

ShesAStar · 15/11/2011 20:48

I really love Sawyer and have never met anyone by that name before.

Clandy · 15/11/2011 21:06

Oooh found you Grin

I LOVE Sawyer from lost! Wink thought he was called it though as it was his surname.... Blush actually do quite like it though

Not keen on Silas doesn't sound very namey to me iyswim

NoHunIntended · 16/11/2011 01:25

I like Sawyer, but I don't know that it really matters what anyone else prefers - we don't all have similar tastes, and you can't please everyone.

Fishpond · 16/11/2011 02:03

No he called himself Sawyer b/c of the guy that broke up his parents / caused their deaths...his name was actually James Ford.

Ah must have missed that never really watched it to be honest but he is hot Grin

The name is def one I like the sound of though can imagine a cute little Sawyer!!

TeWihara · 16/11/2011 21:59

I know a Sawyer. Whenever I mention this to anyone they say "what, like SOYA?"

And I have to say "no like that guy from Lost."

It's a silly conversation, and thus it has totally put me off it.

I can also think of quite a few recent evil Silas' in fiction so not really keen on that either!

TeWihara · 16/11/2011 22:00

Silas also makes me think of Silo's too. (for pig poop)

Fishpond · 16/11/2011 23:42

Sawyer does not at all sound like Soya though in an American dialect, so that doesn't put me off in the least.

The only thing Silas reminds me of is "silence", I am trying to imagine myself shouting "silence, Silas!" Grin

Silas is great - Silas Marner was my favourite book at school. I also like forest-y names (living in the forest as we do) and alongside Silas have Sylvan at the top of my list, I love Syl as a nn.
