Can't decide on name for new daughter (not yet born). Don't want it to be too popular nor too outmoded. Any suggestions? Are the names Sandra, Linda, Violet, Marjorie and Maud due for a comeback or have the already been and gone in popularity? I noticed a young Violet on Facebook ...

Violet is a sweet name - not my favourite, but I do prefer more traditional, "popular" names. Popularity doesn't really put me off as long as I love the name however not keen on "faddy/in" names though but rather names that are and have always been popular such as Oliver, Charlotte, Benjamin, Emily etc...popular but I know people with these names who are OAPs/middle-aged/my generation/kids and babies...never really an issue of whether they have made a comeback as they never go anywhere - I know that is a problem for a lot of people on here!

Personally I can't stand the other names you mentioned but we obviously have very different tastes! As far as I know those names other than perhaps Violet have not (yet) made a comeback...

How about Lydia rather than Linda? Cassandra rather than Sandra?

Towndon · 12/11/2011 12:01

I like Violet best of the names you mentioned.

How about Susan, Josephine, Lillian, Mary, Sylvia, Frances, Christina, Edith, Victoria, Sarah, Alice, Katherine, Deborah, Anne, Laura?

AberdeenAngusina · 12/11/2011 15:19

I think Violet is in use at the moment, but not Linda or Sandra. I don't think Marjorie will ever make a come back; it sounds too like "margerine."

Violet is lovely.

QueenVictoria42 · 12/11/2011 17:06

Violet is the best out of your suggestions. Sandra/Linda and to some extent Majorie are very much child of the 50s/60s to me. It may just be me, but the Linda's and Sandra's I know are all 50+, I would automatically assume a Linda or Sandra to be this age if I saw their name on a list somewhere IYSWIM. I don't think they are ready for a come back!

Maud is a name that conjures up such drudgery to me. It's an ugly sister name, and I can't place why, but it's in the same camp as Morag, Edith and Mabel for me. Sorry.

Vegeromum · 25/02/2012 16:27

Thanks for suggestions. Actually I love the 'child of the sixties' feel for names so I'm going for one of those. It was such a great time for women wasn't it?
I think of Linda as the Linda in Nancy Mitford's book The pursuit of Love (very upper class) and Sandra as the epitome of New-Woman Sixties-Sophistication and arty-fartiness, a name for artists, actors and musicians.
I shall be a trend-leader!

You go for it!!!!!

although please not Marjorie or Maude! Smile

sonniebonnie · 27/02/2012 22:15

If you want to avoid 'trendy' names, I'd steer clear of Violet as I've been hearing this mentioned a lot recently amongst pregnant friends.

But Linda (I'm one Smile), Marjorie and Sandra seem less 'trendy' currently. I particularly like Sandra - it sounds lovely in most languages too.

sonniebonnie · 27/02/2012 22:15

The only name I don't like the sound of is Maud, I'm afraid.

misslinnet · 27/02/2012 22:48

I met a 4 yr old Violet today.

I know several Lindas, but they're all in their 40s or 50s, so I don't think that one's ready for a comeback yet.

Kaekae · 27/02/2012 23:10

I love Violet, could never use it as I have a flower name already but would use as a middle name. I would not go with the other names you mention.

SheKnittedHimAJumper · 27/02/2012 23:17

I love Maude! Smile and, Violet.

I also like Edie, Martha and Milly.

I dont know what is popular with girls, there are so many names that are used these days.

PercyFilth · 28/02/2012 12:45

Sandra and Linda are very 50s, but Violet, Marjorie and Maud are their mums and grans!

I dislike Violet as it's only one letter away from Violent. Maud is a bit blunt-sounding, but I did once know a Maureen who went by Maud as a nn.

Marjorie I think is very pretty. I don't think people are so familiar with margarine as a word these days - butter substitutes seem to be mostly referred to by brand names these days. I had an aunt Marjorie who was called Marnie which is also nice.

welovesausagedogs · 28/02/2012 13:01

Violet is the only name from your list that i think is nice and isn't very outdated.

what about -

Lillianne
Jemima
Alice
Millicent - Millie
Amelie
Scarlett
Iris
Briony
Cecelia
Harriet
Edith - Edie
Evelyn - Evie
Elizabeth - Betty
Christella
Agatha - Aggie
Elodie
Annabell
Charlotte - Lotte/Lottie

ipanicked · 28/02/2012 20:43

I know 2 Mauds (age 2 and a baby) round here (nn Maudie) but I'm just not sure its just on the pretty side of old lady chic. Haven't heard of any of the others on your list (Violet is definitely the nicest). Congrats btw!

girliefriend · 28/02/2012 20:46

How about Sylvia nn Sylvie?

Don't like any of the others sorry, Violet is o.kay.

whippetwoman · 29/02/2012 10:54

My son has a Maud in his class (who is lovely) and I know two people who have named their DDs Violet. I think names like Maud, Violet, Iris, Edith, Elsie, Betty and Agnes are having a revival. I know two girls called Agnes.

I really like the 50s and 60s names and they will have their day again. They are so unusual now. I love Marjorie in particular. I like Linda too and I'd be surprised if she ever came across another Linda or Sandra in school or nursery. I know a little Margot, which is also a cool name.

birdofthenorth · 29/02/2012 11:16

Violet is gorgeous. Love Maud too. Sandra/ Sandy would be sweet and the only one in her class for sure.

Not a Linda fan (love Rosalind/ Lindy though?). Marjorie doesn't really float my boat (makes me think Marge in The Simpsons and Neighbours) though Mo is a sweet nickname.

I have a Bess and was stunned to hear there's another one the same age in the same small town so you just never know!! I have also, this very morning, received an email intended for a colleague with the same very common Christian name though, not for the first time, so applaud your drive to find something more unique for this generation.

happyhorse · 29/02/2012 11:30

Marjorie is a pretty name - if you can avoid shortening to Marj. Or how about Margot? Maud is the ugliest girls name imaginable IMO.
