How much do initials really matter?!

I'm coming up to 39 weeks with DD2 and think we want her to be a Beatrice. DD1 is Matilda and called Tilly all the time and I think that Beatrice and Matilda sound good together and Bea and Tilly are also v sweet together. For family reasons, our preferred middle names are Elizabeth and Rose - we used 2 for Tilly, so feel we should probably use 2 this time as well. And our surname begins with T.

So, we could either have B.E.R.T. or B.R.E.T. as initials. Is that a problem?! Will she spend her whole life being called Bert or Bret, do you think, or is it not really something to worry about?

Thanks!

I htink it's only a problem if it spells out a profanity. Or IRA or something. At my school we had to have our initials embroidered on our PE kits and there were some shockers

dearheart · 10/11/2011 16:02

I think that is fine - quite nice actually as it gives the option of Bertie as a nn. The initials that you want to worry about are the ones that spell out something obscene or embarrassing. Bert or Bret are both fine.

ShatnersBassoon · 10/11/2011 16:02

One of my children's names spells a word, but only one person (my mum) has noticed.

Middle names are used so infrequently, it will be very unlikely that it will be noticed.

So long as the initials don't spell out a rude/funny word then I don't think they matter. Love the name Beatrice Elizabeth Rose by the way. Quite like Bertie as a NN though even though it's a girl! Blush

Excellent! That's what I wanted to hear, thank you. Funnily enough, I love the name Bertie and think that it would have been pretty high on the list for a boy - so perhaps this is my subconscious way of having that as a nn! I suspect you're all right though - I'm sure no-one other than us will really think about it or even notice if we do go for it.

my boy name was going to be D.A.M

good job I had girls!

Towndon · 10/11/2011 17:18

BRET reminds me of Breton.

BERT is an old man's name.

QueenVictoria42 · 10/11/2011 18:50

It's fine. In any case most of the time you just use the first name and surname for initials, so she will be BT which is perfectly normal.

Psammead · 10/11/2011 21:15

Oh I think BERT or BRET would be just one of those 'Ha! Waddya know?' type trivial things.

If it was PIG or SLUT or FAT or something, then it would be a problem.

nancy75 · 10/11/2011 21:17

My initials are NOB!, Honestly apart from a couple of childish sniggers it has never, never been a problem, and come on, bert is not nearly as bad as nob!

thedevilisinthedetail · 10/11/2011 22:11

My dd1 is Matilda called Tilly and if our second child had been a girl she would have been Beatrice Elizabeth Rose...with a surname beginning with B she would have been BERB which I think is quite bad! (We had a boy though...still got two middle names).

Love the potential nickname Bertie as well. Excellent names!!

LadyMontdore · 11/11/2011 14:29

Well I very much approve of your choice but I am biased!

I would go nuts if anyone called my little BR bertie though!

DaisySteiner · 11/11/2011 14:36

I've got a T.E.N., a C.A.N. and a T.O.N.

Hasn't caused any problems so far.

seeker · 11/11/2011 14:38

My mother and her sister were AM and PM. They liked it and it kept them innocently amused for nearly 90 years!

mayanna123 · 11/11/2011 14:38

My initials are M.A.D. and I love it Grin!

101North · 11/11/2011 14:39

unless you're going to call a child Cecilia ............oh damn i can't think of a girls name beginning with U....

It doesn't matter. I've got one whose initials are R.O.T. I didn't actually realise and I still don't reckon I give a damn. Smile

DaisySteiner · 11/11/2011 14:47

William Alfred Neville Knox would also be a bad move Grin

101North · 11/11/2011 15:50

William Alfred Neville Knox Bernard Angus Gallagher would be even worse Grin Grin

Yummymummyyobe1 · 11/11/2011 16:23

I am glad I am no the only one with the initial dillema. We like
Mary Alice Park, M.A.P
Peter Oliver Oscar Park P.O.OP
Benjamin Uri Michael Park which makes me smiles he would forever be my little B.U.M.P
