Pollyanna Beatrix

My other name Henrietta Xanthe has had mixed responses but I expect this to be less well received.

I've noticed a few in the broadsheet BA's over the last few years. Is it useable? Does anyone know any in RL?

Pollyanna is just a no. It's too frou frou. Henrietta Xanthe is lovely.

LadyMontdore · 07/11/2011 19:29

No, to many connatations of tweeness and ick.

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 07/11/2011 19:29

pollyanna - no no no

Montsti · 07/11/2011 19:31

I actually prefer Pollyanna Beatrix (possibly Beatrice) - a really beautiful name! I know a few Pollys but no Pollyannas.

largeginandtonic · 07/11/2011 19:34

I bloody LOVE it. Gorgeous name. Do it.

Towndon · 07/11/2011 19:34

I preferred Henrietta Xanthe.

Pollyanna will always be associated with the character.

Beatrix sounds too much like dominatrix, but I like Beatrice.

How about Beatrice Henrietta or Xanthe Beatrice?

Tillylove · 07/11/2011 19:59

Love love love this name! Gorgeous! Got name envy! x

PessimisticMissPiggy · 07/11/2011 20:01

It depends what her social circle is going to be. If she's off to boarding school then Swiss finishing school then great, but if she's more likely to be off to the Local comp then Pollyanna isn't really going to stand her well.

The second names you've chosen are both much nicer than the first ones and she's less likely to get the P taken. Personally I'd go with Xanthe Beatrice.

Rhubarbgarden · 07/11/2011 20:20

I don't hate it but it's very, very fussy.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/11/2011 20:26

Why not just Polly?

scarlettsmummy2 · 07/11/2011 20:29

I think pollyanna is lovely. It does make me think of the film, however, I don't think this is necessarily a and thing- it is not like she was a demonic child or anything!

ninedragons · 07/11/2011 20:29

Polly is fine, but Pollyanna is ludicrous.

Especially when she's 15 and locks herself in her room for two years listening to Joy Division.

threecurrantbuns · 07/11/2011 21:12

I love it but think Beatrice instead of Beatrix for the middle name.

I've always liked Polly and think Pollyanna is really nice for a girl and when she is older she can always just use Polly

ViviPru · 07/11/2011 21:39

I suggest Polly Anne (i.e. Anne as a middle name)

MrsOzz · 07/11/2011 23:34

I LOVE Xanthe. But it means blonde/golden/yellow and I am as brunette as they come!

Polly - lovely and underused
Anna - classically simple
Pollyanna - frilly and I think of Pollyanna!
Henrietta - it sounds awfully posh to my ears. I have a friend called this, known as Hettie, and it really suits her though!
Beatrice/Beatrix - doesn't do it for me. But MN seems to love it. If I had to chose one it would be Beatrix as both Bea and Trixie could be nn.

nooka · 08/11/2011 05:34

I'd not use Pollyanna because the character is so well known that the term pollyanna (an excessively or blindly optimistic person) has entered the dictionary. Plus it's just a bit twee and OTT.

I like Henrietta Xanthe :)

HauntedHengshanRoad · 08/11/2011 07:23

Pollyanna...

God, no.

exoticfruits · 08/11/2011 07:42

Polly or Anna but don't join them for the poor DC. I would go with Anna.

JaneBirkin · 08/11/2011 08:05

Please don't, it has no good connotations for me

Beatrix is nice as are Polly and Anna but NOT Pollyanna

It's like calling someone WendyJemima

You just shouldn't do it

JaneBirkin · 08/11/2011 08:06

anyway the girl in the book was massively damaged

the optimism was a coping strategy and the stuff behind it must have been appalling

sorry, just makes me think of a very sad child who has been let down by the entire universe but still smiles

something not right about it tbh

threecurrantbuns · 08/11/2011 09:39

Hmm after janes comment maybe not although there is always some negative association to most names but that one is well known still like Polly though.

february1970 · 10/11/2011 12:58

Lovely names both of them, an understated elegance. They also make good "adult" names. Love Henrietta a tinsy bit more than Pollyanna. You never hear these names yet everyone knows them! Be brave, at least them won't be boring like some of the names that crop up.

cupofteaplease · 10/11/2011 13:09

I love it, but then my 3 girls all have 'twee' names.

MrsCarriePooter · 10/11/2011 14:24

There's a woman at my work known as Polly. When we found out her real name was Pollyanna I'm afraid we laughed. She's a nice friendly person and it still seems an unfortunate name because of the character - dread to think what it would be like if she was actually a moody old miseryguts.

Psammead · 10/11/2011 21:18

Well, I like them both, but prefer Henrietta. Beautiful, classy, classical, versatile, underused name.
