We need a name for DD born yesterday, I am half indian so I want an anglo-indian-y name

What do you think of these...

Lira (My grandmas name)
Lia
Alia
Amaya

I like the letters A, L, M and N for names and no hard letters in them (T, Z etc) - I know I am odd Grin so if you have any other suggestions let me know.

Thanks

Lira (My grandmas name) - no getting away from the old italian currency connection
Lia - Possibility of being pronounced 'liar'? otherwise, pretty.
Alia - see above
Amaya - my favourite.

My anglo-Indian friend has a daughter called Jaya which I think is beautiful. Not one of your favourite letters however..

nailak · 07/11/2011 19:16

erm lira sounds like an Italian currency, but is pretty
lia sounds like leah
alia, is a muslim name? Aaliya?
Amaya is nice

Montsti · 07/11/2011 19:17

I like Amaya the best - really pretty name! Congratulations!

puzzletree · 07/11/2011 19:18

I love Lia, it's always been a favourite name of mine. Also like Amaya a lot.

TerrysNo2 · 07/11/2011 19:21

You know I never thought about my grandmas name as the Italian currency, even though I know that was it. Don't suppose this generation will remember it though, unless it all goes tits up and they revert back - not an impossible scenario!!

Ha ha - yes might happen so be careful!

Towndon · 07/11/2011 19:33

I like Lia and Amaya.

smother · 07/11/2011 19:38

As another suggestion, there is an Amara at my daughter's school and I often think what a lovely name it is.

LittleBrownBird · 07/11/2011 19:42

Maya or Amaya. I like Uma or Oma (which means life-giver), Zahira (which means shining light) and Zarina (the name of an anglo-indian friend)

Rhubarbgarden · 07/11/2011 20:23

I like Lia. How about Nadia?

TerrysNo2 · 07/11/2011 20:51

Nadia isn't possible, too close to my name

All very pretty and underused (in the UK anyway Smile). I agree that the younger generation won't have a clue about Lira being the old Italian currency, so wouldn't worry about that.

Would you pronounce Lia like Mia? It is very pretty.

TerrysNo2 · 07/11/2011 21:10

Lia like Mia yes, think we might go for Alia, pronouned A-lia (rather than a liar Wink) and then shorten it to Lia.

I like Amaya too. In fact I like all of them! Which is no help.....

cep · 08/11/2011 07:56

i like Lia and Amaya i think they're both very pretty.

TiarasTimeOutsAndTantrums · 08/11/2011 07:58

Amaya is gorgeous

Merlioness · 08/11/2011 08:45

My vote is for Amaya :)

SootySweepandSue · 08/11/2011 08:49

It is not immediately obvious to me how to pronounce Lia, so I would have that as a consideration. If it's the same as Leah I would spell it that way.

Iwish · 08/11/2011 09:01

I like Lia if it's said as Leah and Amaya. Xx

MackerelOfFact · 08/11/2011 09:10

I think Lira is lovely, especially so as it's a family name. I don't think the currency thing is a problem, it doesn't seem to bother people called Marc or Frank.

Not mad on Amaya or Alia unless you have Arabic (?) roots. Lia is OK but isn't it just a different spelling of Leah? Which is very plain and dated IMO.

birdofthenorth · 08/11/2011 09:24

How about Amira? Like Amaya and Lira

oohlaalaa · 08/11/2011 10:19

I love Amaya

Pippaandpolly · 08/11/2011 15:59

Hi Terrys Grin I like Amaya and Lia a lot. All very pretty though.

Steffi90 · 10/11/2011 12:27

I like names that have L, E, A, I, R and M in them. Makes it sound feminine. :)

Other suggestions:
Niah (beautiful in my honest opinion)
Sara (classic meaning Princess, but still golden)
Mia (another beautiful one)
Rae (like the ae on it, makes it pretty)

Just a couple of suggestions.
Congratulations :-)

TerrysNo2 · 10/11/2011 14:35

Thanks for all your input, I don't want to announce her full name on here but it is one of the short list and we are v happy with it. She may be keeping me up all night but she is so gorgeous she is getting away with it Grin
