What do we think? Just came across it. Think the pronunciation should be You-lay-lee rather than you-lah-lee (to rhyme with doo-lally!)

Is it a bit mad... ?

I have only ever heard the name from Jeeves and Wooster, where it is the name of a ladies' underwear shop. But I suspect that might be random enough for most people not to immediately think of it.

3isamagicnumber · 07/11/2011 18:16

Never heard of it and yes, a bit mad IMHO! Smile

No one will pronounce it properly and it makes me think of eulogy.

Montsti · 07/11/2011 18:41

Makes me think of a ukelele or someone yodelling - a bit mad yes!

What about Eugenie? Beatrice seems to be very "in" at the moment...

MrsStig · 07/11/2011 18:42

Sorry, but it sounds a bit silly to me.

coccyx · 07/11/2011 18:44

No, no , no

EdithWeston · 07/11/2011 18:50

I think it's a lovely name.

I'd pronounce it 'you-lay-lee'

picnicbasketcase · 07/11/2011 19:18

In J&W it was pronounced more like 'YOU-luh-lee', emphasis on the 'Eu' part.

'fraid I think of the underwear shop too.

SootySweepandSue · 07/11/2011 19:23

It sounds familiar somehow...is it Scottish?

ConcreteElephant · 07/11/2011 19:29

Another J&W fan here who now has visions of Bertie Wooster being chased round the house by Spode, trying desperately to remember the name of his ladies' underwear shop...

Also reminds me of Santa Eulalia, in Ibiza, which is very lovely, but had a very Geordie holiday rep when we went and I can't say the name now without using her accent :)

Sorry OP, no help at all. It's pretty but does conjure these images in my head...

Towndon · 07/11/2011 19:32

It's a bit odd TBH. How about Eugenie?

Pollykitten · 07/11/2011 19:34

Jeeves & Wooster for me too, I'm afraid. Also, hard to pronounce, don't think she'd thank you for it!

thesurgeonsmate · 07/11/2011 19:36

On paper, it looks like it should be a nice name, but I'm a great believer in not using a name you don't know how to pronounce. And despite it's attraction, I find that I don't know how to pronounce this. If you don't either, move on!

LadyMontdore · 07/11/2011 19:36

Oooo hello other J&W fans!

picnicbasketcase · 07/11/2011 19:48
Grin

Euclid!...Euthymol!

tigerandtabs · 07/11/2011 19:51

sorry, but to me sounds like it could be a nickname for "lady parts'.... don't ask me why, that's just what it sounds like to my (clearly weird) ears Blush

Polkadotfanatic · 07/11/2011 20:03

Thanks guys...
Back to Thea, then :)

Rhubarbgarden · 07/11/2011 20:18

Thea is splendid.

MrsOzz · 07/11/2011 23:29

It's a town in Ibiza I think! Santa Eulalia (or v similar) and that was pronounced to rhyme with Doolallia!

choux · 07/11/2011 23:35

reminds me of ukelele or however you spell the banjo like instrument!

Thea... now that.s gorgeous.

HauntedHengshanRoad · 08/11/2011 07:21

Horrible.

MackerelOfFact · 08/11/2011 09:40

It sounds like a yodel! You-lay-lee you-lay-lee you-lay-lee-ohhh!
