hmmm i think i quite like it!

makes me think of Sybil Shepherd who I really love!

LaFilleSurLePont · 06/11/2011 21:11

Awful.

frutilla · 06/11/2011 21:12

I prefer Cybele...

hellhasnofury · 06/11/2011 21:13

Brings back memories of Fawlty Towers but then I am of a certain age.

PrincessWellington · 06/11/2011 21:14

That will teach me to watch downton abbey Grin

Mollydoggerson · 06/11/2011 21:15

I like it

Collision · 06/11/2011 21:17

cybil shepherd
fawlty towers

means prophetess or oracle

lollystix · 06/11/2011 23:16

I just always think gerbil when I hear that name. I'm not a fan of all this maude, mabel, Daphne fashion and I would put Sybil in that bucket I'm afraid. Old names are fine in general but I think some shouldn't be resurrected BUT you'll never please everyone so I think you need to go with what you like.

Towndon · 06/11/2011 23:17

I like it :)

Clary · 06/11/2011 23:19

I think of an 8yo I know, a friend's daughter. I love it but she (my pal) gets a lot of "oh, is that a family name...?"

The Sybil I know is fairly strong and not a girly little girl at all; she knows what she wants and she really suits her name. Of course there's no way you can know that, but if your child suited (for example) Olivia or Arabella then she wouldn't suit Sybil. Not much help that really.

I like Mabel too btw but I know I am in a minority Grin

meditrina · 06/11/2011 23:25

I rather like it, but I do think the Fawlty Towers association might make it a bit hard to live with.

AgathaPinchBottom · 06/11/2011 23:28

I think Sybil is great. Lovely name.

reallacecurtains · 07/11/2011 02:14

Love it! Also been influenced by Downton Abbey, I admit it Smile

RillaBlythe · 07/11/2011 04:56

I really want to like it - it's dp's granny's name - but I struggle. Fawlty Towers. Sylvie I like though, has the same feel to me.

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 07/11/2011 05:09

Love it. It was my Great Aunt's name. I think of it as a strong, dignified name - probably because that was the kind of woman she was.

If she's a Downton Abbey character (not watching it but heard about it) then there will be squillions of Sybils soon.

Rhubarbgarden · 07/11/2011 08:27

Love it.

lisianthus · 07/11/2011 08:52

Lovely

Tillyscoutsmum · 07/11/2011 08:53

I do like it (isn't Billie Piper a Sybil ??) but can only hear it being said in Basil Fawlty style

GwendolineMaryLacey · 07/11/2011 08:55

I must admit, Fawlty or Shepherd. But, I actually really like it, which is surprising because I'm not really into old lady chic. But yes, really like it.

Montsti · 07/11/2011 12:06

I don't like it at all and agree completely with what Lollystix said including the "I think you need to go with what you like".

GodKeepsGiving · 07/11/2011 20:53

I'm considering it too! I am pregnant and it was my late mother's name. We'll never please everyone - if you like it go ahead. I may well join you Smile

rachel234 · 07/11/2011 21:03

I like it. I also like Sybille, with the emphasis on -bille.

ViviPru · 07/11/2011 21:45

I have a friend called Sibille, French origin, and have always liked it and never made the Faulty Towers connection, weirdly, as that was the first thing I thought of when I saw 'Sybil' on this thread. I looked it up and there is also the spelling Sibylle which is nice too. I'm usually firmly in the classic spelling camp but on this occasion I think an alternative spelling makes all the difference.
