Hoping for some advice from you all. I don't know what I'm having but have had no problems with names for a DS.

DH and I have always struggled with DD names. He wants his mum's name as middle name - Theresa which cuts out names ending 'a'.

We like Isabelle but don't like Izzy but are having doubts as it is so popular. We have been discussing Harriet this evening, Harri as a nick name.

Would be grateful for opinions.

is there a name you really like that ends with A?

LynetteScavo · 03/11/2011 22:29

I don't think it cuts out names ending in a.

Anna Theresa flows well.

Sophia Theresa. (Just to prove a point! Grin)

Isabelle, shortened to Belle?

I like Hattie as a nn, more than Harri, but that's just me. Harriet is lovely.

Give us your ds name so we know what things you like, goo on.

AnonyMaw · 03/11/2011 22:34

I think you need to provide us with more guidance as to your tastes, like what other names are you thinking of, what is your chosen name for a boy? One source of inspiration can be the registry offices online lists of given names, here I've copied the link for scottish names, there's top 100 and also a list of all given names:

www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/theme/vital-events/births/popular-names/2010/detailed-tables.html

I think the same data exists for England.

MerryMarigold · 03/11/2011 22:35

Naomi is really nice

I wouldn't worry too much about it going great with the middle name. It never gets used anyway tbh. Go for a name you love.

zozzle · 03/11/2011 22:36

Please no more Isobels or its variants. I know about 10 ranging from 0-16.

Love Harriet.

MerryMarigold · 03/11/2011 22:43

Very different names I think. Isabelle is pretty/ girly/ soft and flouncy and Harriet is tomboyish/ hard/ confident. If it's a girl, think of one afterwards.

planetpotty · 03/11/2011 22:48

Love love love Harriet go for it!

proudfoot · 03/11/2011 22:56

Harriet is a lovely name.

Agree middle name of Theresa doesn't rule out all names ending in A if you found one you wanted.

What about...

Connie Theresa
Catherine Theresa
Florence Theresa
Rosalie Theresa, could call Rosie or Rose
Imogen Theresa
Caroline Theresa
Charlotte Theresa
Beatrice Theresa
Madeline Theresa

Thank you all for your responses. I think part of the problem is we both think we are having a boy.... No reason other than a feeling so every chance we are wrong!

We are going to call a DS William so I think our tastes are quite traditional really.

I know what you mean about ignoring the middle name - I last used mine at my wedding over four years ago!

We are keen on Harriet and its nice to see people like it and also think there are a lot of Isabelles about!

My MIL name is Teresa. We wanted to use it in some form for DD2's MN but decided we would use Rae, Reese or Tess as a nod to it instead of Teresa.

DD2 now has Rae as her MN as it went best with her chosen first name.

And please, for those trying to put you off Isabelle. It is a beautiful name and use a lot for that very reason. DD1 is Isabella after several family members and known as Ella. I know of no others where we live and considering we have 3 DDs you would think if it were that common we'd have come across one in her 8yrs! It is a regional thing and depending on where you live it's not an issue.

William is a lovely choice and Harriet is ok but for some reason it always reminds me of a donkey ConfusedGrin

zipzap · 03/11/2011 23:02

Do you actually like the name Theresa? You say your dh wants it but it doesn't sound like you are very keen...

Have you got other children that have names from your side of the family or is he getting first dibs on naming after somebody?

Is there another name (first and middle) that you would like to use that doesn't include Theresa?

BibiBelle · 03/11/2011 23:03

Oh and MIL loves the fact that we took part of her name - she says it's all very 'modern' and makes her feel younger lol

Pastabee · 03/11/2011 23:15

Thanks bibibelle that's a good suggestion and something to think about further.

I'm happy with MIL's name as middle name. DH was very clear that I could say no if I wanted but it means a lot to him and I've been with him 13 years so she's definitely a mum to me too after all this time!

Smile glad to have helped. For example DD2 was almost Phoebe Tess and so on. She was genuinely pleased as punch too bless her!

Montsti · 04/11/2011 06:29

Isabelle is lovely or Annabel or Isabella etc...popular yes, but My opinion for a reason. All beautiful names. Belle, Bella, Ella can be nns.

Btw - love William!

Montsti · 04/11/2011 06:30

"but IN my opinion" - damn computer...

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/11/2011 07:22

Harriet is a great name

emmyloo2 · 04/11/2011 07:25

Harriet for sure. It's a great name and not overused. Every second girl born is called Isabelle or some form of Isabelle.
