Possibles at the moment:

Boys:
Hugh Patrick
Diarmuid Patrick
Rory Patrick
Oisin Patrick
Darragh Patrick

Girls:
Aoife Patricia
Niamh Patricia
Roisin Patricia
Aisling Patricia
Mairead Patricia

Comments, criticisms and further suggestions welcome!

Oooh, I love Patricia, and Patrick too, for that matter.

How about Sinead or Imelda?

SecretNutellaFix · 02/11/2011 21:06

I like Darragh- in fact it came straight to mind when I read your other boys namesGrin

I think Mairead works well too.

suzikettles · 02/11/2011 21:15

Ciaran Patrick
Seamus Patrick

Orla Patricia

LBP · 02/11/2011 21:17

Thanks. I forgot about Sinead. Love that too. Less sure about Imelda for some reason.

Do you prefer Darragh to Dara? I have gone back and forth on the spelling of this name and am still not sure which I prefer. Also pondering Dermot instead of Diarmuid given that the first is more familiar to a British ear.

My Godfather's grandson is Daragh, with only one r. Dara, lots of people would automatically assume a girl, not boy.

LBP · 02/11/2011 21:24

X post suzi. I really like both Ciaran and Seamus but have cousins with those names which unfortunately for us rules them out.

Orla is going on the list though! It was one of our choices had Cillian been a girl so I am not sure why I forgot it this time around. As well as being a pretty name, I like the fact that the spelling and pronunciation are fairly straightforward Grin

It depends on how much it will wind you up when people pronounce the name wrong! I have two children with names from your list and there are days when I wonder why I did it.

Rory and Hugh are pretty fail safe (and lovely boys names). All the girls names are gorgeous - most Irish girls names are - Aisling is probably the easiest for non-Irish people to pronounce. Ciara is also a good one, and I love Orla too. My all time favourite is Saoirse but I knew I wouldn't have a hope in hell of anyone getting it right without prompting.

LBP · 02/11/2011 21:32

I know what you mean! I think it is the experience of constantly having to explain its K-illian rather than S-illian that is making me have doubts about Oisin and several of the girls names. One lady I know calls him Gillian and because i didn't correct her the first time (I wasn't sure I heard her right) I now feel too embarrased to point out her mistake!

Doesn't Darragh mean second, the second son's name, and you are looking for a third? I like Hugh or Rory.
All your girl's names are lovely, with a personal fondness for Roisín.

SinicalSal · 02/11/2011 22:00

No Darragh means 'Oak Tree', which is lovely.

I like Roisin from your list.

Wouldn't be keen on Rory - too much like ronan for brothers.

SoupDragon · 02/11/2011 22:07

A friend with a Ronan also had an Aidan. I prefer Darragh to Dara purely because, to English eyes, Dara looks like a girls name. I think your girls names are all lovely and work perfectly fine in the uk.

mybootsaremuddy · 02/11/2011 22:32

I actualy like all your choicesGrin. But if i had to put in order i would say:

Boys:
Rory Patrick
Darragh Patrick
Oisin Patrick
Hugh Patrick
Diarmuid Patrick

Girls:
Aoife Patricia
Roisin Patricia
Orla Patricia
Niamh Patricia
Mairead Patricia
Aisling Patricia

Love Aisling and Mairead.
Boys Name for Finlay in Scots Gaelic is Fionnlagh - lovely

proudfoot · 02/11/2011 23:25

I prefer your girls list to the boys list. Hard to pick from the girls - I love Niamh, Roisin and Aisling. Was going to suggest Fionn or Fergus for a boy.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 03/11/2011 07:03

Oisin or Darragh
Orla or Aoife

Montsti · 03/11/2011 07:17

My favourites are Hugh and Orla but that is also because I would worry about the pronunciation/spelling issues in the UK. Other than Rory (which I'm not a big fan of) the others have the very real potential of being mispronounced/spelt.

Towndon · 03/11/2011 08:22

Hugh or Aisling.
