Frederick, Rowan, Rory

QueenVictoria42 · 01/11/2011 13:49

Of your girls names I like Erin, Tess, Emmeline, Cecily, Lucy and Matilda.
Sama as lessthanaweeknow I think Artemis is a boys name. Sounds masculine - sorry I don't know Greek mythology (is that where it comes from?) - to me it sounds like one of the 3 Musketeers, hence boys name.

Of the boys I like James, Patrick, Nicholas, Rory (really like this!), Caspar, William and George.

Artemis was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities, daughter of Zeus. Her Roman equivalent is Diana.

I think people often mistake it as a boy's name due to the books about a boy called Artemis Fowl - however the opening of the book acknowledges that it was originally a girl's name I think...

fredandginger - thanks for the explanation. Just googled 3 musketeers - there's one called Aramis, that's why - I confuse it with that.

fredandginger · 01/11/2011 14:19

Ah, I didn't know that - interesting :)

Erin- Like, I'd 'expect' erin to be an elfin style beauty!
Clara- Like, old-fashioned without being dreary.
Elizabeth (Betsy)- Prefer Elisabeth, only Betsy I've known was a bit of cow
Elspeth- Too old fashioned for my taste (says the woman who likes percival)!
Tess- Girl I knew at school had the nn Tesstical, so a no!
Beatrice- Beer Tricks, so not keen on.
Aoife- Nope.
Maireade- Never heard before, would need to know how to pronouce.
Emmeline- As said before, with the nn Emmy it would be awesome
Cecily- A bit bland imo.
Cordelia- Love, lots of NN potential!
Lucy- Juicy Lucy. She'd get sick of the nn!
Mary- Nice, but a bit bland (compared to some of your other names), maybe a middle name?
Artemis- Love, but would only use if there were Greek roots in the family.
Matilda- Starting to be really popular around here (Sarf London)
Mabel- Had a great aunt Mabel, plus it's the dog from Blue Peter.
Anna- Nice, but not amazing!

James- Every boy I know under 5 has this as a middle name, plus I hate nn Jamie & Jim.
Patrick- Good, but I personally would expect Irish roots (we ruled it out cos of this)
Nicholas- Like.
Rory- As someone who had a lisp & a mate called 'Warrey' as a kid, this is a no!
Henry (Harry)- Love Henry & Harry...is Harold a no?
Caspar- I prefer it spelt Kaspar/Casparus (first thought is Kaspar Hauser).
William- Classic, as long as he doesn't become a 'Billy'!
Wilfred- Although I think Wilf is a nice nn, it's a bit 'wet' (don't ask why)!
Albert- Piercing. Sorry can't think of anything but willies!
George- LOVE! Would use this myself, but know a horrible George!
Frederick (Fred)- Love...have never met a Frederick in RL.
Rowan- Like, have known both boy & girl Rowan's, deffo better as a boys name!

fredandginger · 01/11/2011 14:41

Thanks for the input everyone - headlesswoman, Maireade/Mairead is pronounced ma-raid (changes slightly depending on region/accent I think)

I love Tess, Beatrice, Clara, Aoife, Mairead (or Mairéad) -- the last two especially if you have Irish connections. [Don't spell it Maireade though]

For boys, Patrick, Albert, Rory and Nicholas.
