And does it flow nicely enough because I've said it too many times to know now! Also like Winnie Emmeline but friends have scoffed

I would be inclined to use Winifred (maybe with Winnie as a nn). I think it has a sort of feisty quality in an old fashioned way. Perhaps even a little gothic, in a nice way.

Prefer Winifred Iris to Winifred Emmeline.

Ooo Emma and Iris are the 2 girls names I've picked so far so I heartily approve of those. But winnie just reminds me of the Wonder Years (obv not a problem nowadays) and the noise a horse makes.

TimeWasting · 27/10/2011 16:59

I love Iris. Winifred is a lovely name too, I'd use that and call her Winnie.

LaFilleSurLePont · 27/10/2011 17:28

Winnie is dreadful. I'm not fond of Iris either, and Winnie Iris really doesn't flow well imho.

frutilla · 27/10/2011 17:29

Agree to Winifred, very pretty name. Think Iris goes better. Other possibility is Emmeline Iris which also flows...like your choices!

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 27/10/2011 17:29

I had a Great Aunt Winnie - to me it's very old lady.

rubyslippers · 27/10/2011 17:29

I love Iris

Winnie is not my cup of tea at all

CurwySwide · 27/10/2011 17:56

Love love love Iris. Winifred/Winnie is nice but not a patch on Iris. What about Iris Winifred? Or Iris Emmeline?

ceeceeanne · 27/10/2011 18:04

Thanks for all ideas. Dont want Iris or Emmeline as first name but happy to hear ideas for middle names for Winnie or if people think Winifred is better

PosiesOfPoison · 27/10/2011 18:09

I know a couple of Winnies and I love it,.

PosiesOfPoison · 27/10/2011 18:09

Not Winifred.

RefereezaWanka · 27/10/2011 18:49

Both nice names, but not together. It's not so much the 'old woman' factor, they just don't flow so well.

Winnie is a great first name, btw! I;d got for a longer middle name, e.g.

Winnie Josephine
Winnie Clementine
Winnie Elizabeth

ceeceeanne · 27/10/2011 21:17

Posies are they young Winnies and do they like their name?
I Like Victoria or Elizabeth for middle names too just Have very small reasons for not using them, also fancied a flower

I prefer Iris to Winnie and would have Iris Elizabeth. I had a great aunt Winifred and really associate it with old women or, of course Winnie Mandela..

I would use Winifred with nn Winnie if you must, but personally I'm not keen on it, very old-lady for me and just not a pretty name.

Iris and Emmeline are both lovely though. I know you don't want it, but I do think Iris Emmeline or Iris Elizabeth would be perfect!

PosiesOfPoison · 28/10/2011 20:57

Not sure I've ever met any young child that doesn't like their name!! And yes they're young.

BibiBelle · 28/10/2011 22:41

We were going to use Winnie as a nn for Arwyn, it was only just pipped at the post when DD1 was born by her chosen name

CheekyChoppers · 29/10/2011 12:08

My middle name is Wynne and too be honest I've never liked it, not as a child or an adult. I'm glad its my middle name and not my first.

Having said that, if you love Winnie, you should use it and not be swayed by the opinion of others. Everyone has their own tastes and I'm sure plenty of people will love it!

Meglet · 29/10/2011 12:10

I love Winnie. I've known one child and one beautiful black lab with the name. The girls real name is Winter though, nn Winnie.

Iris is nice but I can see what you mean about it being old-ladyish.

Clawdy · 29/10/2011 12:52

Sorry, but have to say Winnie is awful,on a par with Hilda and Gladys and Ethel. Now I guess someone will say they love those names! Shock

PinterestQueen · 29/10/2011 13:26

This is my Nanny's name and she hates it. I think that colours my opinion but it does have so many connotations.

mathanxiety · 29/10/2011 17:11

oooh Hilda -- I love Hilda. I met a little Brunhilde (sp?) a few months ago. Love Tilda as a nn for Matilda too.

Gladys and Ethel -- bleurgh.

mathanxiety · 29/10/2011 17:12

Guinevere is lovely too and might lend itself to Winnie as a nn...

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 29/10/2011 22:15

in all honesty, I really don't like Winnie but LOVE Iris and Emmeline (prob not helpful!)
