Dh and i have really struggled to come up with boys names this time. We are currently thinking about Flynn, though whilst i love the name I have some reservations about it gaining popularity and the possible misspelling of it? Other names we love but can't use are Seth (nephews name) Jonah (name meaning puts us off) and Noah (too popular)

What does the MN baby name jury think?

Seth is good. What's the meaning of Jonah then? Didn't know it had a bad one (I like the name).

Flynn is ok as is Noah but I'm not super keen on either.

What about Bryn, Jude, Max, Corin...

upatdawn · 26/10/2011 17:27

Flynn is gorgeous and I think that once people have seen it a few times spelling won't be an issue. I'm not too keen on Noah or Seth but that's just me :)
One of my most recent name loves is Cain - old testament like Seth and Noah but I just love it!

upatdawn · 26/10/2011 17:28

just saw Jonah as well, I like it and I didn't know it had a bad meaning either

SoClose · 26/10/2011 17:32

I wish i hadn't looked Jonah up either, it means dove but also bringer of bad luck Sad Now I know, i can't forget about it.

Thanks for the suggestions, Know 2 Cain's/kane's and both really naughty strong willed Wink and like Bryn, but feels too welsh!

1 vote for Flynn so far then...

I like all your suggestions and have a Noah. We also liked Milo, Asa, and Silas.

comedaygoday · 26/10/2011 17:46

Jonah is a lovely name. To be honest I am a bit surprised that you are wary of using.it, presumably because of the story of Jonah and the Whale, but are considering using Cain who was the first murderer. If you like Noah, but are worried about popularity how about Caleb, Jeremiah, Silas, Asher or Solomon.

benandhollyandgaston · 26/10/2011 17:48

I love Flynn, really like it, spelling it like that seems quite intuitive to me?

Like Milo too. Know one little Joel and really like that too.

SoClose · 26/10/2011 18:06

Thank you all.

Pippi Thank you. liked Milo initially, but have gone off it now!

comedaygood I like Caleb, but a friend's Ds has just been named that. Not considering Cain anyway, but especially now I know its meaning Wink

benandholly I like Joel too, but unfortunately Dh doesn't.

I think we have been through every possible names and the only one we both agree on is Flynn...

benandhollyandgaston · 26/10/2011 18:19

Go for Flynn, it's a great name Smile

Montsti · 26/10/2011 18:22

Agree - go with Flynn!

SoClose · 26/10/2011 18:22

Thanks benandholly Smile

It is good to get opinions on it as not talked to anyone about it.

SoClose · 26/10/2011 18:23

Oooh, another vote in favour Monsti Smile

Jonah doesn't mean bringer of bad luck afaik. The OP story of Jonah was about the prophet and the misfortunes that befell him while he was being an unwilling prophet but also his triumph over them. This is how the name became associated with misfortune, but actually the story is about effectiveness and perseverance. The meaning is 'dove'.

Would you like Jonas? It's Lithuanian for John.

I think Flynn will become more and more popular as people cast around for an alternative to Finn, which is taking over the planet.

MamaMimi · 26/10/2011 18:25

Do you like Cole?

SoClose · 26/10/2011 18:37

I agree with you Manx the story of Jonah and the whale makes the name positive to me, but reading threads on here the superstition of it also meaning bad luck is reasonable well known enough to put me off. I also agree that Flynn may become the default choice for those that like Finn, but know how popular it is. But. then i think would they still mostly go for Finn anyway iyswim?

'A long-established expression among sailors uses the term "a Jonah" as meaning a person (either a sailor or a passenger) whose presence on board brings bad luck and endangers the ship.[17] Later on, this meaning was extended to "a Jonah" referring to "a person who carries a jinx, one who will bring bad luck to any enterprise. (From wiki)

Jonas could be a possibility though!

Mama Love it written down, but to hear it I only hear Coal!

Jonah makes me think of Jonah Falcon, the porn star with the largest, ahem, appendage in the world.

Flynn was on our list, so here's a few others along the same lines (was a long list!!)...
Asher
Danyl
Elyas
Eli
Espen
Ferryn
Idris
Levi
Merryn
Mykah
Nyjah
Soren
Zen

mathanxiety · 26/10/2011 18:51

Jonah's ship sank in a storm while he slept. He was saved by a whale iirc and washed up on shore inside the whale.

mathanxiety · 26/10/2011 18:52

Would you like Fintan or Finbar?

SoClose · 26/10/2011 19:04

bedat I think that says more about you than the name Wink I like Eli from your list, but don't like it enough. Some of the others are just too much iykwim.

math (just realised I have always read your name as Manx!) read your last suggestions in an irish accent in the style of Mrs Doyle! I like both, but am just not feeling them.

I like Flynn. I prefer Jonah but I didn't know the meaning. But I wouldn't be put off by it.

diddl · 27/10/2011 11:55

Jonah is fantastic.

Isn´t Flynn the name of Orlando Bloom´s son?

mathanxiety · 27/10/2011 15:04

LOL at Mrs Doyle [hgrin]
