Am interested to know what everyone actually decided on!

Over the years have come to the opinion that some names are tantamount to child abuse[ANGRY].

gaunyerseljeannie · 30/10/2011 23:44

Strike me down I have an Oliver! Personally I love the name and don't regret naming my DS it despite it's popularity. I believe it's a classic name that ages well and despite the fact that it has peaked in the past few years has always been around and therefore not faddish. It is also a stand alone name i.e. Not confused with other names a la the Lilly, Tilly, Milly, Molly brigade etc...(for what it's worth I do like all of these names so no disrespect to people who have named their DCs these just making a point).

There seems to be an obsession on here (not this parti thread) to name your child with an unusual/not popular name and people seem very anti certain names because of their popularity alone. Completely understand if someone doesn't like a part. name because they just don't like it. Am sure Oliver, Thomas, Harry etc.. will slip down the rankings and be replaced by new names. I have actually known hundreds of Alexander, Nicholas, James etc.. over the years (probably only know about 5 of each under 5 at the moment admittedly but way less older Olivers) but in 5 years time it will all even out and they will all still be around as they are classic names.

I have a popular classic name (peaked at my time of birth) and it has never been a problem, in fact some of my friends with unusual names hate the fact they always have to spell/pronounce their names etc...and were at times teased at school too.

Sorry for the long message and I do think it's great people go with unusual/not as widespread names if that is what they love! Btw - some beautiful names on here!

BOOareHaunting · 31/10/2011 07:34

My friend has 2 DD's and me 1 DS. ) our DC's are 18mths apart eldest to youngest.

Her DD1 Olivia would have been a Thomas if a boy.
My DS Tomas would have been Sofia if a girl
Her DD2 Sophie would have been Thomas if a boy.

Grin We met when DC's at day nursery and often laugh about how if things were different we would have had 2 Thomas' or Sophie/Sofia.

Ha ha! Love your choice of names. A bit of an early morning rant from me - my excuse is I'm 10 weeks pregnant and hormonal....That's the reason I've been on these name boards recently as find out in less than 3 weeks what we're having so looking for ideas..am determined not to be put off names because they're too popular!

ilovesprouts · 31/10/2011 10:04

^Boo me and my best friend met up 18 months ago for the first time since school, she has a girl and I a boy the same age and we'd somehow both arrived at George! Playdates are VERY confusing for the babies :0)

Can't tell you as would out me completely. Just asked my dd's what I call them though and they said; dd1 - crumpet, dd2 - pop pop. Neither is in anyway related to their real names.

Dont know why I spent so much time choosing their actual names when I seem to call them any old rubbish!

mopsyflopsy · 31/10/2011 15:22
