Ophelia

We are talking about having another child in the not too distant future. IF we have a little girl I would like to call her Ophelia. My daughter is called Ariadne and I think Ophelia works well with her name, what do you think?

I love it - elegant, feminine and not overused.

mopsyflopsy · 20/10/2011 15:47

Very pretty and goes well with Ariadne.

MamaLazarou · 20/10/2011 15:48

As long as your last name is not Bottom.

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 20/10/2011 16:03

BEautiful, I was going to use it if we had a girl - Much to my husbands disgust "Errr what?"

But I love a bit of Shakespeare

serin · 20/10/2011 19:10

Wasn't there a rumour that Ed Balls' daughter is named Ophelia?

I like Ariadne, it's pretty and unusual. Ophelia seems more heavy and ponderous.

jandymaccomesback · 20/10/2011 22:58

Depends where you live. Ophelia could be the subject of "I feel yer" type jokes in some areas. I know of a newborn one in Yorkshire and it hasn't gone down terribly well.

deviladvocate · 20/10/2011 23:02

I do think it's a pretty name. my shakespeare's a bit rusty - didn't ophelia go mad and drown in hamlet? I'm not sure but i think i'd want to check out the storyline before committing to it.

Kayano · 20/10/2011 23:22

There was a stripper called Ophelia Balls round our neck of the woods...

Sorry

MsMarple · 20/10/2011 23:27

She did indeed go mad and drown. Far too depressing for a child's name IMO.

PinkFondantFancy · 21/10/2011 05:17

I love it. Unusual and elegant. Why should the fact that Ophelia in Hamlet came to a sticky end be relevant? I'm sure there's stories with characters of every single name that you can think of that had bad stuff happen to them....

WinkyWinkola · 21/10/2011 05:56

There are happy and sad associations with every name. Ophelia in Hamlet did go mad and drown but she was a beautiful, caring woman.

I know an Ophelia. She's also known as Fifi or Lady O for fun!

It's a beautiful, elegant and as yet, underused name. Go for it.

FearfulYank · 21/10/2011 05:58

I love it, it's one of my favorites. :)

Kayzr · 21/10/2011 06:45

I love it!! I'd love to use it but DP said no.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 21/10/2011 06:47

Lovely name.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 23/10/2011 15:46

It's a lovely name. If I wasn't a superstitious theatre director I'd consider it

suspiria · 23/10/2011 16:11

I'm a really big fan of Ophelia and also of Ariadne, beautiful names

notactuallymyusualname · 23/10/2011 16:15

Sweet, but I think she might need a strong personality to carry it off.

birdofparadise · 23/10/2011 16:16

..she will never be able to marry Master Balls or Master Cox. Or indeed Payne.

Seriously, it's a beautiful name.

LaFilleSurLePont · 23/10/2011 16:41

It's beautiful. An excellent choice.

greenzebra · 23/10/2011 17:48

Ophelia is a beautiful (not biased at all DD is called this) name and goes well with Ariadne.

RefereezaWanka · 23/10/2011 17:55

It's pretty but the Shakespeare character just completely puts me off, sorry.

MelinaM · 23/10/2011 18:00

Ophelia is a lovely name that compliments Ariadne beautifully [hsmile]

FairyArmadillo · 23/10/2011 18:20

Ophelia's lovely. Ariadne is one of my favourite names. Love your taste in names, OP.

zoley · 24/10/2011 00:10

Both names are lovely, again biased towards Ophelia as it's our daughter's name. Only ever met one other Ophelia so far, another Mum who said she loved her name and liked that it was so unusual.
