DH's name so I'm a tad biased, but I quite like it - I know a few 'little' George's too Smile

chinateacup · 19/10/2011 20:04

Yep.
Solid, uncontroversial, timeless...

ellesabe · 19/10/2011 20:16

I think it's better as a middle name personally.

Fixture · 19/10/2011 20:21

Very nice, classic name :)

AliGrylls · 19/10/2011 20:23

Name of DS1 so obviously I like it.

pilates · 19/10/2011 20:41

Love it, one of my favourite names.

sahara13 · 19/10/2011 21:16

Ds 1 name here too and we've never regretted using it!

Methe · 19/10/2011 21:18

Every George I've ever met has been lovely, loyal and kind.

Ds is too.

My favourite boy name :)

emmyloo2 · 20/10/2011 07:17

My DS of 11 months is George. We liked it because it is reasonably underused but classic. No regrets from our end.

cantpooinpeace · 20/10/2011 07:23

I have a George, love it :)

JiltedJohnsGhoulie · 20/10/2011 10:09

We have a George too and he is fab

rachel1970 · 20/10/2011 11:37

Fine, a little dull perhaps imo, and quite widely used already.

JiltedJohnsGhoulie · 20/10/2011 11:47

Although I have a George I do have to agree with you rachel, DS is 7 now and although it was popular then, in the top 20, I think it is in the top 10 now. When DS started school there were no others, now there are six of them in a school of 200, all the rest are younger than him and I know a few little Georges too.

We chose it because it is a family name on both sides but if it had been top 10 then I would have reconsidered.

tammytoby · 20/10/2011 12:56

Quite popular already (although I hadn't realised top 10!) - I know three George's under age 5. You can also see from the responses that there are lots of little George's out there already.

Personally I think there are far nicer, less overused, classic boys names to choose from. Have a look at the ONS statistics, outside the top 100 names for inspiration.

babybumblebeee · 20/10/2011 13:22

Overused.

Methe · 20/10/2011 14:26

You know names are nice when a lot of people use them :)

evamummy · 20/10/2011 15:34

"You know names are nice when a lot of people use them"

No, you know names will be widely used if lots of people use them.

JiltedJohnsGhoulie · 20/10/2011 20:14

Why are you asking Rydwin? Are you thinking of using the name? have you got a shortlist?

izzybiz · 20/10/2011 20:20

My youngest is George after my Grandfather.
Its a good strong classic name, if you like it, use it.
I'm not fussed if its 'too popular' Dh and I love it.

babybumblebeee · 20/10/2011 20:30

I don't think George is a timeless classic at all. There were NO Georges in neither my primary or secondary schools. Nor did I know of any young Georges until 15/20 years ago. It's kind of the old Alfie. In 10 years time people will be saying that Alfie is a timeless classic as it would have been in popular use for the past 20 years. It's like they will know it's an old name, but they'd have forgoten that it went out of fashion for many years.

JiltedJohnsGhoulie · 20/10/2011 20:34

See this is exactly why I was asking the OP is she is thinking of using the name, as her original post just seems to be phrased for causing trouble.

Rydwinhofficoffi · 20/10/2011 20:40

Well it appears to split opinions.

and yes jilted a kind of shortlist (it is early days) and debating on whether it should be on it

I don't think you can go wrong with George, probably one of the least controversial names ever (except on mumsnet!)

I think it is nice but do agree it is not exactly timeless - there were very few Georges when I was growing up in early nineties, one of my teachers had a little George and it was perceived as very posh/dated. Now there are tons! However, I do think this applies to a lot of allegedly timeless names - for example I did not know of any Sams or Toms growing up and now these names are very commonplace. Even classic names go in cycles.

babybumblebeee · 20/10/2011 21:18

Sam and Tom were popular when I was at school. I was born in 1974.

mopsyflopsy · 20/10/2011 22:07

Steve and Mike were very popular at my school in the 1970s - lots and lots of 40 year olds around now (too many in fact, as it can get confusing).

George seems to have become a little 'trendy' recently - I know three under age ten. Nothing wrong with it but I personally find it a little dull.
