It's very pretty but you're risking her being called Lav.

AheadlesswomancalledHorse · 19/10/2011 11:37

There's a character in Downton Abbey called Lavinia?! [hshock] this was top of my girls list..so I am slightly biased; it's a great name (and even though it's long/slight poncy looking it's hard to mis-pronouce).

Do you think people will remember Downton Abbey in a few years and think I've named LO after her (please tell me she's not a major bitch)?

mumofbumblebea · 19/10/2011 11:41

no she's a nice character. don't think downton abbey will mean anything to our kids generation anyway.

i'm a bit concerned about Lav. quite like Liv as a nn though

Lavinia is beautiful and not overused. Great choice and if you need to shorten, then Liv or Livvy is cute.

tammytoby · 19/10/2011 11:55

Try hard - yes, and we should ALL 'try hard' to find such beautiful underused names for our children.

Rhubarbgarden · 19/10/2011 12:51

It's nice but slightly long and frilly for my taste.

millyv · 19/10/2011 12:56

I had the same conversation with DH last sunday! x

Fixture · 19/10/2011 13:13

Not keen, sorry.

Psammead · 19/10/2011 14:22

Some Lavinias go by 'Vin' which is rather charming.

I like it. I think it's glamorous and feminine.

Cwtchbach · 19/10/2011 14:45

I love it! But I'm biased as that is my name :) Also my Mam's name and my Gran's name, all the eldest girls in our family have it. Both me and my Mam go by our middle names to avoid confusion. People call my Gran 'La' OR 'Vin'. It could also be Livvy, Nia, Vinnie x

thousandDenier · 19/10/2011 14:47

Always makes me think of the question "Is there a lav in 'ere?"

Cwtchbach · 19/10/2011 14:50

I should also say that I've never met anyone outside of my family with the name so I got quite a shock when I took DS to his first day at nursery and there was a little girl called Lavinia. It suits her very well.

EdithWeston · 19/10/2011 14:55

I think it's a gorgeous name.

But I would think long and hard about whether you can face Lav as a nn - even if it's not your choice, it will crop up in the playground (but if she's in a class with a Louis, a Lulu and a Willy then you've the makings of an in-crowd).

MamaLazarou · 20/10/2011 15:27

Very pretty.

I used to work with a Lavinia and she did get called Lav.

evamummy · 20/10/2011 15:29

Lavinia is gorgeous. Pretty and underused.

I don't get the 'try hard' comment either... we should all try hard to find lovely names for our children, shouldn't we Hmm?

hatebeak · 20/10/2011 16:20

More worrying than Downton Abbey is Titus Andronicus, where really terrible things happen to the character of Lavinia. I think of that every time I hear the name, I'm afraid. But I understand that's not necessarily a deal-breaker.

minipie · 20/10/2011 16:51

I quite like it, but Lav or Lavvy would be a worry.

What about Letitia? Similar? And Tish is a good mn IMO.

Jazziemc · 01/12/2011 20:18

Oooo... I'm so behind on this convo, but I love downton and will be calling my little one Lavinia too.
Thought about "Lav" but tbh, at school age, noone uses that anymore. They probably don't even know what it is!
My husband and I have got a Sebastian already, so don't know if we'll be sounding completely up ourselves!

MidLine · 06/12/2011 15:56

Lovely name, very feminine. Would use myself but surname begins with L and might sound silly!
