How is the name Guto perceived outside of Wales?

Dc3 is due any time now and I know that he is going to be a boy. I had no problems naming dd1 and dd2 but dh and I are completely stuck on boys names. Both of us like the name Guto (pronounced Geit-oh) and most local welshies are positive about it. However, a couple of relatives/friends who over the border really don't like it. I've known a couple of Guto's over the years and they have been rather cool, very gorgeous sporty blokes which has probably increased my preference of the name!

Anyway, would you say yey or nay?

Guto is lovely, go for it. Love Gethin too (my dad's name) but agree it is getting very popular.
Just looked up the story of Guto Nydd Bran and realised in his case Guto was a diminutive of Griffith (another good name).

I looooovvveee Griffith but was pipped to the post by another friend.

SenSations Gwenno is a wonderful name. One of the nicest EVER. It always makes me think of "pa bryd y deui eto i edrych am dy Wenno, pa bryd y deui eto wrth grwydro, Deio'r Glyn?" (Folk song.) I LOVE Deio too, for that matter :o

Mrs Bebb is called Esyllt according to wikipedia. Another gorgeous name.

My hormones must have been mental when I was pg with DC1. If he'd have been a girl, he'd have been Lloer. Bearing in mind I am a pale moon-faced girl, the teasing would have been terrible... :o

Esyllt is a great name. I loved Eirys too, but it doesn't suit our surname.

What about Gwyllm (sp) or Wyre?

Cory no offence at all, and I could see your point perfectly, it just tickled me! It was a point well made especially as the boys were watching 'pointless' tonight (goodness only knows why but that's another thread) and there was a question on languages, DS1 was totally incredulous that hardly anyone would know that 'Bore da' would be a greeting in Welsh. We live in a Welsh language bubble here, but I pointed out to the Ds's that they speak the contestants language perfectly whilst they don't understand his. I imagine your Swedish names are beautiful (and unlike DS2 here they aren't one of three in their classes)

DigOfTheStump I have one of those and we spell it Gwilym although that's probably diffrent somewhere, Wyre is a great name too.

I think I've come across you on here, lostinwales - Am I right in thinking you're in the south west? I am mid-Wales coast, but from north west originally- Quite weird going from somewhere that is a bubble of Welshness to somewhere where it's considered a quaint quirk... :(

I have a grandma called Gwendolyn. My cousin has used the name Gwennan, so not able to use any Gwen names.

I'm a welsh english mix, lived in Oswestry (just over the border, till I met my welsh DH, and moved 5 minutes away into Wales), with a welsh dad english mother.

I read your first post, and thought, oh I've always pronounced the name wrong, saying Git-oh instead of Geit-oh. I immediately assumed, that I was using the wrong pronounciation, and so never mentioned it. Glad its been corrected!
